Je...desto.../Je...umso...

These constructions are synonymous and they can be used to express how one thing depends on another. I’ve heard from some German native speakers that they prefer the usage of desto and it sounds better in their opinion however, umso is absolutely fine and understandable too. 

Je + Komparativ..., desto + Komparativ

Je mehr Schokolade ich esse, desto glücklicher bin ich. = The more chocolate I eat, the happier I am.

Je mehr Deutsch ich übe, umso einfacher ist es für mich, mit den Muttersprachlern zu reden. = The more German I practice, the easier it is for me to speak with native speakers.

Je weniger ich schlafe, desto schlimmer fühle ich mich. = The less I sleep, the worse I feel.

Je weniger ich shoppe, desto mehr Geld habe ich. = The less I go shopping, the more money I have.

What was a problem for me and I believe it can be for others too is the position of the verb in each part of that construction.

Je + object + subject + verb...,

Je mehr Schokolade ich esse...,

Subordinate clause begins with the word “je”. It requires us to put the verb at the end of the sentence and use the same word order as in weil/ dass sentence.

...desto+object+verb+subject

desto glücklicher bin ich.

“Desto” is a part of the main clause. Here the word “desto” and the comparative are connected and always stand next to each other taking the first position in the sentence. The verb follows directly after them and takes the second position. The same rule applies when you substitute “desto” for “umso”.
