You know those days when you feel both restless & bored? That's been my day so far. So I picked up Thornhill by Pam Smy, since it's quick spooky read, half-filled with illustrations & black pages. Thornhill follows two girls in two different timelines - Mary in 1982, through her diary, & Ella in 2017, through wordless illustrations. It's about bullying & loneliness, with a dash of freaky puppets. Tinder by Sally Gardner is a dark fairy tale for adults. It's more akin to the dark & gory original fairy tales than the cleaned up versions made into Disney films. There's death, war, and violence. But somehow Gardner has maintained the fantastical narration we all associate with fairy tales. The illustrations by David Roberts were a perfect complement to the story. Sinister, stylized, and completely in black & white, with splashes of red. My niece got me this book for my birthday because she's all about girl power & she knows I love horror. Monster She Wrote by Lisa Kroger & Melanie Andersom is a fantastic & beautiful book. The illustrations, the dedication, the content - they're all amazing. I love a good naked hardcover & this has that lovely rubbery texture to it. And I love how with each author they provide recommendations of books by the author & books by similar authors.
