Listen, listen, listen— this was so tender (toothachingly so) of Dean. This person is his best friend. A companion outside of his brother. He adores Castiel, that's his Angel, the one extraordinary being he has faith in and he finds that man dead. He's learned that Castiel has become human, infinitely more vulnerable than he was before. The first thing Dean does is go to touch his face and I always found that fascinating with Dean, his need for touch. The tenderness that comes from a well-aged hunter and this juxtaposition of cradling your dead best friend's face. Dean is ready to give others the things he never had.
