RIP Sam Winchester, you would have HATED the 2016 killer clown panic
there was a very long and unimportant conversation leading up to this that I won't bore you with
but my sibling and I decided that Sam sleeps on those silk pillow covers because he saw it in a "healthy hair tik tok compilation"
all along it was some invisible string — S.W.

Sam doesn’t realize it all at once.
It sneaks up on him, which somehow makes it worse.
They’re driving. Late. The road is empty in that endless, middle-of-nowhere way. Dean’s music is low, not turned off but not demanding attention either. Sam’s staring out the window, watching the highway lights blur past, thinking about nothing and everything.
She laughed earlier. Not loud. Just a quiet, offhand laugh at something stupid Bobby said. Sam felt it in his chest before his brain caught up.
That’s when it hits him.
Not like panic.
Like clarity.
Like gravity finally doing its job.
“…fuck.”
Dean glances over. “What.”
Sam swallows. His hands tighten on his knees. “I’m in love with her.”
Dean doesn’t slam the brakes. Doesn’t choke on his food. Doesn’t even look surprised.
He blinks once. Then exhales through his nose.
“…yeah. You think?”
Sam turns to him, stunned. “You knew?”
Dean shoots him a look. “Sam. You light up when she walks into a room. You text her back faster than you text me. You let her see you when you’re wrecked without pulling the whole tortured-hero thing.”
“That’s not—”
“You’ve been sleeping,” Dean cuts in. “Like, actually sleeping. You wanna know how I noticed? Because you stopped pacing at three in the morning.”
Sam goes quiet.
Dean keeps his eyes on the road. “You came back messed up, man. Soul back but not settled. And then she was just… there. And you started feeling things again.”
Sam rubs a hand over his face, voice rough. “I don’t get to do this.”
Dean sighs. “You don’t get to not do it either.”
The silence stretches.
“What if I hurt her,” Sam says quietly.
Dean shrugs, honest. “Yeah. You might.”
Sam’s chest tightens.
“But you won’t do it on purpose,” Dean adds. “And you won’t leave her wondering if she mattered.”
A beat.
Dean smirks. “Which already makes you better than half the idiots she’s probably dated.”
Sam lets out a weak huff. “You’re not helping.”
Dean grins. “Oh, I am. I’m just not letting you pretend this is news.”
They keep driving, the road unspooling in front of them, the truth settled heavy and unavoidable between them.
Sam stares ahead, heart pounding.
Yeah.
He’s in love with her.

She doesn’t know any of that later, sitting at Bobby’s kitchen table with her legs tucked beneath her, the house humming quietly around them.
Bobby pours them each a drink and studies her over the rim of his glass.
“You’ve been happier lately,” he says.
She frowns. “I have?”
“Mmhmm.” He sets the glass down. “Didn’t say you were allowed to be.”
She lets out a soft laugh, then shrugs. “I don’t know why.”
Bobby watches her a second longer than necessary. “Funny thing is, I think you do.”
Her phone buzzes against the table.
Sam. Just a check-in. Nothing heavy. Nothing dramatic.
She smiles before she can stop herself.
Bobby follows her gaze. “That Sam?”
She exhales. “Yeah.”
He shakes his head, fond but firm. “Don’t make this a soap opera, kid.”
She lifts her glass. “No promises.”

The boys show up a few hours later.
She knows it was a bad hunt the second Sam walks through the door. He looks wrecked in that quiet way he gets when the adrenaline wears off and everything he’s been holding together starts to crack.
He drops his bag and crosses the room without hesitation, pulling her into him like it’s instinct.
His arms are tight around her. Desperate without being frantic. Like he needs the contact just to stay upright.
She hesitates for half a second, then wraps her arms around him, presses her cheek into his chest. Feels his breath hitch. Feels the way he holds on a beat longer than necessary.
Dean watches from the doorway, lips twitching.
Bobby sighs, already resigned.
Sam doesn’t let go right away.
Neither does she.

Later, the house is quiet.
Dean’s gone to shower. Bobby’s turned in. The night hums low and steady, wrapping around the walls like a held breath.
She and Sam sit on the edge of the spare bed, shoulders brushing every time one of them shifts. Close. Careful. Familiar.
Sam stares at the floor for a long moment.
“This is gonna sound stupid,” he says.
She glances at him. “Then you’re probably saying it right.”
He huffs, almost a laugh. Then his voice goes softer. “I keep thinking about how I end up here. With you. Every time.”
She tilts her head. “You mean Bobby’s?”
He shakes his head. “I mean… you.”
He looks at her then, really looks, like he’s lining up something he’s been afraid to name.
“Even when I wasn’t myself,” he says. “Even when I didn’t feel anything. I still came back. Still looked for you. Like something was pulling me in this direction and I didn’t even notice.”
Her throat tightens. “Sam…”
“I don’t believe in destiny,” he adds quickly. “Not like that. But I don’t think this was random either.”
She swallows. “It feels like we keep circling back.”
He nods. “Yeah. Like there was something tying us together all along.”
The words sit between them, heavy and real.
She exhales. “Almost like an invisible string.”
Sam freezes.
Then he smiles, small and honest, like relief more than triumph. “Yeah,” he says. “Exactly like that.”
They’ve kissed before. Late nights. Heat without weight. Comfort without questions. Something easy they never named in daylight.
This time is different.
Sam lifts a hand slowly, giving her time to pull away. His thumb brushes her cheek, grounding.
“Tell me if this is a bad idea,” he murmurs.
She leans in instead.
The kiss is softer than before. Slower. Less about hunger and more about recognition. Like they’re both confirming what they already know.
When they pull back, they don’t move apart.
They’re still not defining it. Not yet.
But they’re not pretending it’s nothing anymore.
And for now, that feels like enough.
