remaking my old splatoon oc (the one literally all of my usernames are named after(spike)) because she has no ref sheet and I felt like I should doodle The Scale Of Salmonling
the salmonling are a product of the salmonid-octarian alliance(cannon btw, its where the salmonids gets their machines). they are naturally resistant to water, are occasionally bioluminescent, possess tails,and are usually bred for battle.
an octarian scientist some years ago (before the octarian weapons became wireless) wanted to try and make a better army.
they basically blended a golden egg, some power eggs, and whatever the hell is going on with The Hand Sanitizer Blended Octarian Sludge Of Doom And Despair in kamabo co. to make the first ever salmonid !!! there were 2 mixtures: the one with more eggs (made Kype) and the one with more sludge (made Gillsquid)
salmonids are capable of reproduction (im not sure how yet but they can), and some went on to live quiet lives outside of being a soldier.
some salmonids are born with extraordinary abilities. these include -water breathing -super strength -increased speed and jump height -scales on places other than tail (acts as natural armor) -increased size -the ability to eat fuzzy ooze (rarely ever documented in salmonlings) salmonlings who posess one or more of these abilities are known as Supersalmon and are forced to become a soldier. some families have to hide their children and their powers to keep them from being sent away. this works only 30% of the time.

Okay so. I was raised as a soldier by the military of the Octarians, who lived underground mostly after losing The Great Turf War. Inklings were the winners, but it was really Inklings plus Most If Not All Other Sapient Species. I guess it was just the inkfish who had problems with each other.
In Octarian Domes, barbers are actually pretty important.
Because when Octarians get a haircut they make tentatroopers, which make up the majority of the Octarian military, along with many labor positions throughout the domes, barbers offer their services for free, and instead are paid by the government to do their jobs.
Barbers are trained in how to cut tentacles to create different varieties of tentatrooper, getting orders to prioritize or lessen the production of certain varieties depending on current population demographics, even occasionally damaging the tentacle cuttings to the point nothing will spawn if there is too much of a general surplus.
i like to think that the splatoon language we hear (and especially those of inkfish) changes based on intention and musical context in a song. so all the anarchy rainbows would have a same core theme but are still holiday themed. changes in a few tones/structure conveys entirely new words and sentences
i also like to think it works like that for loops too. maybe a loop in a song signifies wanting to move forward, and thus a song might change to talk about the present/future in the loop if the main part was sung in the past/present
and for songs that loop instrumentals but have different vocals v2 (spicy ci, big betrayal, uh... i can only think of those two) they have a more dramatic change. if big betrayal v1 was about shiv/frye being upset big man collabed with the squid sisters without asking, v2 would be about shiver and frye plotting to "collab" with off the hook WITHOUT big man
songs like three wishes just have a really strong intention so it doesn't need to loop, but if it does nothing really changes
oh and for the case of ci3mx i do think deep cut is singing different words but they're Close Enough that it doesn't pull you out of the song.
(ex: the sea calls out to you/sea how it calls to thee <- not my hc lyrics for ci3mx i just wanted an example)

you know what? im doing a little research today. did you know that in, like, HUMAN times, this stuff called snow would fall instead of rain sometimes? it was like little clumps of ice. itās too hot for that kind of weather anymore but itās cool to think about. wild
