📚✏️BACK TO SCHOOL COSTS 🏫 👨‍👧 Is it just me, or is there an overwhelming pressure to buy new stuff for your kids for when they return to school?! The first day of term is so often filled with perfect photos of children in all their new school uniforms, with new shoes, new bags, new pencil cases... new everything! A couple of years back, I literally spent hundreds of pounds on new uniform and all the kit for my 3 boys. Most of the stuff they already had from the previous year was still in good condition and still fit them, but I still felt it necessary to buy more new things. But no more! After the first lockdown, I reluctantly decided not to buy new stuff (mainly because it was hard to come across). Things were uncertain too, and it felt unwise to buy lots of things that may not get used. And this was a bit of an epiphany moment for me! Wearing previously worn clothes to return to school did not affect my children in any way. They did not have a horrible return because they were not wearing a new bag. They did not write less neatly because they did not have new pencil case. And they didn’t suddenly lose all their friends because they didn’t have a brand new jumper on. I now refuse to buy stuff which does not need to be replaced, just to ‘keep up with the Jones’s’. It is wasteful, expensive, and creates a never ending cycle of social pressure for other parents (who may be much worse off that you). Of course, I will buy items that need replacing, but now this will be on an as and when basis! I strongly recommend that you try this too. 💰SAVE MONEY ON YOUR ELECTRICITY Can you relate to this picture?! I certainly can 🤦🏼‍♀️ With 3 active (messy!) boys, our washing pile is usually like a scene of utter carnage. No matter what I seem to do to tackle it, it never seems to go anywhere. I’m not sure I’ve even seen the bottom of the washing basket for more than 3 seconds (and what a truly magical time it was). I dread to think how much money I spend each year on washing - I’m not sure I ever want to know. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly am grateful that I am able to use a machine to clean my clothes, but in true frugal style, I do like to minimise costs where possible. So, I have discovered a way to make it slightly more cost effective. You may already know this tip, but I thought I’d share it just in case it helps anyone. If you have a washing machine with a timer, set your timer so your clothes wash overnight, ready for you to hang out first thing in the morning. Electricity costs much less overnight (in the U.K. at least), which will save you a substantial amount in electricity charges over the course of the year. If you don’t have a timer, you could try doing your washing at night before you go to bed instead to benefit from the reduced price. The great thing about this tip is that it isn’t limited to just laundry. You can use the same technique with the dishwasher, slow cooker, heated or lit pet tanks... whatever electronics you have which can be left overnight. I often charge devices late in the evening while I’m watching TV, because the price is lower (note: this only works if you don’t fall asleep and leave them on charge all night!).
