legit question: how does one go through the process of getting a speech language pathologist or therapist as an adult?
I used to see one in elementary school from ages like 5 to 9 to deal with a stutter and lisp combo and it was really fantastic for me and it lasted me 2 decades with only minor slip-ups with my stutter.
but Iāve noticed in the past like 6-9 months my stutter has been slowly coming back and saying words and phrases lately has been kinda difficult for me to string together lately. just this morning I stumbled so hard through a whole ass sentence.
anyways I would appreciate some advisement from anyone who went through this process as an adult or knows someone who did as an adult
Athenaās "magical" power
As Iām becoming an SLP (speech-language pathologist), I think even more about Athenaās so-called power. As you all probably know, she can hear the genuine emotion(s) in things people around her say.
So what does that have to do with me becoming an SLP and what even is that? In short, SLPās diagnose and treat communication, voice and swallowing disorders in children and adults. We started talking about voice (disorders) a few weeks ago and how it affects our personality, how and why we even use our voice and stuff.
As weāre listening to people more closely due to sharpening our skills, I realize how much pronunciation, volume, rhythm, tone and more influence the message we get from someone. I know itās not really possible to 'detect' genuine emotions if the person really tries to hide them. But if youāre listening closely and have developed a feeling for or are receptive to that sort of thing, I donāt think itās impossible to guess what somebodyās feeling at the moment.
So Iād say that Athenaās just really receptive to detecting what people are truly feeling because she has great social skills and is more experienced with listening closely. The things that are mentioned aside from these facts are probably said to make her fit in in a world of magatamas and even more unrealistic things like logic.. ;)

There was a young adult on the metro today who I think had autism (99% sure) and he randomly started showing me YouTube videos and talking to me about geography. On one hand I was glad to interact with an autistic person in a non-clinical setting, but it was so hard to repress the SLP in me as we were interacting. I gave a few verbal prompts and cues to maintain the flow of the conversation. So, I keep thinking about whether I interacted with him in a respectful and appropriate way... Do I keep my SLP hat on?...I probably couldāve done better.

When a teacher tells me about a kid who stuttersĀ āOh, he doesnāt need speech therapy. I just tell him to stop, take a deep breath, think about what he wants to say, then say it! ^_^ā
