The thought of Edward always knowing where you are but just pretending he doesn't so that it gives you a false sense of security which once revealed he did know that, it all comes crashing down on the player, potentially making the player more suseptible to becoming the new host as it makes them feel like they'll always be followed as he always knows where the player is..

I just realized something
"You'll like being dead. I promise." Specimen 12 is technically right in a way. The ending where you die and become apart of a cool ghost army to rule the world IS a better outcome than being driven to insanity and becoming just another mindless monster roaming the halls. This implies that 12 was actually being genuine with what they said instead of trying to come across as scary.
