Every time I have someone tell me how "lucky" I am to be in special education without an autism dx (yet) and how they wish they were in special ed and wish they could go to my school because it would help them so much.... I try so hard to understand where they're coming from. But to me, you're calling me lucky for all the trauma I experienced in special ed and lucky for all the abuse I've been put through.
Special education will not fix your life, in fact most programs or schools would make it worse. I understand the frustration, I do. But please understand the perspectives of children and teens being actively abused in special education every day.
So much reform is needed in both public and private special education programs, and until that happens disabled children will continue to be severely traumatized by their schooling experiences.
