"SpeakBeasty" Episode 160: "The Dumbledorean Candidate"
On this episode of SpeakBeasty, hosts Ann, Amy, Geoff, and Marjolaine continue their screenplay-to-movie comparison of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Continuing with a scene-by-scene breakdown, this week our hosts are looking at scenes 20-24 in the Secrets of Dumbledore screenplay. How does the script differ from what is seen on the screen? From Dan Fogler’s adorable ad-libs to scene descriptors that give more context to characters’ actions, there is plenty to discuss!
In the “Phoenix Register,” we cover several Fantastic Beasts cast members’ latest projects and achievements as well as the news of Wizarding World Festival, coming to the United States in 2023.
A Reddit user with a username that makes Geoff lose his mind provides us with a theory about Grindelwald’s escape from prison in the second film. Could that escape have been arranged by the German Minister for Magic so that Grindelwald would be free to run for Supreme Mugwump?
This week’s podcast question is “Do you agree or disagree with the theory that Anton Vogel helped orchestrate Grindelwald’s prison break in the second film? ” Send us your thoughts and theories at [email protected], or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!

We LOVE behind the scenes images. We hope we’ll get to see some soon from the third film!
Spoiler alert - we’re still Fantastic. “That’s news I’ve known for half a year, but…congrats.” “We’re just going to be brutally honest.” “N
Poppy Corby-Tuech: My interpretation of it was that Queenie was going through a huge amount of absolutely racing. She found herself in Paris just hearing all the noise and Vinda able to offer a bit respite, whether that was through the extension of hand on the shoulder in a very human friendly way, just that kind of intimacy that maybe Queenie had been needing, whether it was the fact that Vinda's brain was French and therefore, you know, maybe less noisy to Queenie in some ways. I think the aim of that scene was to try to offer Queenie a calming presence and for this person to be able to stop her mind and the noise going on inside her mind from swirling around.
She was definitely following her from having spotted her in the French Ministry of Magic earlier on. I think she was sent on a mission to find her. So that was definitely an intent in her going to Queenie to be like a good friend. I think the intention was a lot sinister than that, but I think genuinely in that moment she did offer Queenie a bit of calm.
I think it was just tea served, you know, by really aggressive people. I don't think there was anything magically going on with said tea. I think it was just done. I really love that scene. I know it's just a small moment, but I love the fact that there was this floating tea set that was super aggressive, which was poking her about whilst Vinda was just looking on thing erriely calm. I like that there was this sort of outwardly aggressive, very English, like traditional nicey-nice thing, but yeah, I think so, given in a dark wizard's den, but I think it was just tea.
I think this is the power of Grindelwald, that he doesn't... He could've poisoned her, he could've drugged her, he could've used a spell, but actually I think he trusted that she would come to him in a really natural way and it would come from hers as opposed to her being forced. That is really the way that he's persuading a lot of people to do his very dark things around and it's not through mind games or through torture. It's through the sheer power of the words. Obviously, there's manipulation at the intent of it, but it's like, "If we lay the breadcrumbs, they will come."

"SpeakBeasty" Episode 145: "Newt's Got the Moves"
On this episode of SpeakBeasty, join hosts Geoff and Marjolaine for an exclusive interview with Joshua Shea, the actor who portrayed a young Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
During our interview, Josh tells Geoff and Marjolaine all about his audition process. He says he had a suspicion that he was auditioning for a young Newt but didn’t have confirmation of that fact until quite a ways into the process. Josh was as starstruck as any one of us would be when he met Eddie Redmayne for the first time, but he says the Oscar winner was gracious and had lengthy conversations with him about Newt’s character.
Josh also dropped a big piece of insider information. Apparently, in an early version of the script for the second film, young Newt and Leta were supposed to kiss! Josh says that detail was cut prior to filming because he and Eddie decided it was out of character for Newt to be very intimate in a school-aged relationship. Josh says he believes Newt and Leta had a loving connection but not a very physically intimate one. Ultimately, it was decided to have them brush hands instead.
When it came to filming scenes with creatures and other magical elements, Josh says he was astonished by the expertise on set in the form of movement experts, puppeteers, and contortionists. He explains how he was coached through hand movements when holding a Bowtruckle.
While Josh doesn’t know what the future might hold for Newt, he can confirm we won’t be seeing flashbacks of his past in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Josh says he does not appear in the next film, but he does not rule out any future appearances.
This week’s podcast question is “What part of Newt’s past would you like to see more of?” Send us your thoughts and theories at [email protected], or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!
