Game Reviews: Space Hulk (2013)
This is my first experience with a Warhammer 40k product, a series I've always been interested in from afar but never actually had the chance to get into. I'm not gonna spend a fortune on the board game, that's for sure. A game like this seems like a good way to get a handle on what it's all about.
And it ends up being an interesting attempt at a strategy game, in a way I assume is hewing close to the original board game. I like that the units are so bulky and slow that you have to spend action points just to turn around, but as an offset you have series firepower and range. I like the little camera that shows the POV of the marine you're currently moving. And I like the variety of options available to solve a mission.
Unfortunately, it doesn't really come together well. It's an extremely slow game, and I found it to run terribly on the Vita. Selecting moves and moving is needlessly drawn out and complicated by weird button combos, and the camera kept breaking on me. Plus, some of the dice rolls are obnoxious, which is not unusual for a strategy game but when it's so easy to lose it's just annoying. I had some fun with the first few missions of it but I don't have the desire to go farther. Might check out something else Warhammer in the future though.
5 outta 10
