Doodling the main character from my book
File this under: I didn't say it was good, I said I liked it. I think this book could have done with a little more editing- or maybe I just read it so fast the repetitive words really stuck in my craw.
That said I had so much fun with this book I immediately downloaded the next book, Ironling (review to come). I felt this was a cute and quick read with likeable characters. I can understand why I saw it being recommended so much!
One of my favorite things is having something on my TBR for a while and checking it out on a whim and finding it really just hits the way I wanted. This did it for me, and I will be checking out more of S.E. Wendell's work for sure.

Day 21: Animatic (?)
I can't make an animatic because I don't have video editing software on my phone. Have a comic instead, featuring two of my OCs that came to me in a dream 10 years ago.
Day 22: Style Experiment.
I tried to represent some of my main characters in a more abstract form. Mixed success!
Day 23: Soul Mates.
It sucks when the narrative device ships you with someone you hate. ♠️
Day 24: Character Redesign.
I randomly chose a character from my character reference list and redesigned Zerill. This was needed anyway, because her original deisign and colors were too similar to Fang's ( I was 12 and loved black, red, and purple. Oooh so edgy!) Changing her creature essence from a vampire bat to a fruit bat opened up a lot more interesting design possibilities.
Day 25: Video Game Screenshot.
Have a fake screenshot from the Final Fantasy X Prequel Sapphic Visual Novel that I'll never have time to make.

Day 6: Musical.
I've only watched like maybe 5 musicals in my life, and most of those were community theater. This gave me the opportunity to illustrate that one joke that I made back when some character in Homestuck ( I think either Slick or Crowbar) called pool "Table Stick Ball". The lines are a swap of the ones said in The Music Man.
Day 7: Anime.
Weirdly, it was difficult to choose a subject for this day, but then I remembered Speed Racer, and Tally was perfect for it since she also races (motorbikes, but she can have a car for fun.)
Day 8: 'Core Aesthetic.
I picked wacky pomo, which I think is also sometimes called kidcore? (Maybe? Idk.)
I love the bright colors and funky shapes that come with the style. Very 90's toy store.
Day 9: Indie Game.
For this one, I drew my Fan OCs for the game Outer Wilds! I love that game so much ::D
Meet Coal, Moissan, and Sodalite! I haven't posted a lot about them yet, because I'm kinda shy about fan characters (and also I'm still working on that comic). Fun fact: They're all dead by the time the game takes place ::D
Day 10: Unnecessarily Complex.
I'm super pissed that I can't get a good photo of this one, because I worked really hard coloring it! 😭 It looks so cool in-person.
This 'fits the theme' of "unnecessarily complex" because it has many light sources, complex character outfits, and everyone is at different levels and shit. It took a lot more work than I usually put into a drawing, so at least I got some practice in.
I’m currently rereading Son of the Shadows and have been thinking about the difference in how Niamh and Liadan are treated after they have an affair (not sure what else to call it) with men they love before marriage. Niamh’s action is met with severe disapproval and anger and she is rejected, physically abused, and hastily married off, while Liadan’s action is more or less accepted and she is treated with a lot more kindness.
Yes, Niamh and Ciaran are related by blood and that played a role in how the Sevenwaters men reacted. But, I don’t think it was just that. One thing I’ve noticed, is that Niamh is the only one at Sevenwaters (aside from Red) who looks more like a Briton. Liadan and Sean take after Sorcha physically, meaning they look Irish. There are hints even from the beginning of the novel that suggest that Niamh and maybe also Red may still be viewed as outsiders by the people of Sevenwaters. Liadan makes the same mistake as Niamh (maybe even worse since she ended up pregnant), but she is part of the “in” group (ie. looks Irish) so everyone accepts what she did. However Niamh is viewed as an outsider, so she is treated more harshly.
And no, I don’t think that it’s just that Red and co trust Liadan more because she has a history of making responsible choices (and really I also side-eye that line of Sorcha’s when she first talks to Liadan about Liadan’s pregnancy, because “he sees in you and Sean the strengths of my own family” does suggest that Red trusts Liadan’s judgement because she takes more after Sorcha). Niamh taking more after Red in looks has to have played some role in how the family reacted to what Niamh did.
If Oonagh had never married Colum and cursed Sorcha’s six brothers, how do you think things would’ve changed? Here’s what I think could happen:
Liam would’ve married Eilis and they would’ve been very happy together. I like to think they would’ve had two kids (like Eilis and Eamonn do)—a boy called Colum, and a girl called Aisling.
Diarmid and Cormack probably would’ve been warriors and died in an attempt to retake the Islands like in canon.
Conor would’ve still become a Druid, and sooner than in DotF because there’s no curse to delay him.
Finbar… hmm. I’m not sure about him! Maybe he would become a brithem? Or he could help Liam with stuff at Sevenwaters, maybe using his gift to provide advice? Who knows.
I think Padriac would definitely still leave Sevenwaters and go sailing. There’s nothing really for him to do in the forest. I can see him still running off and finding him own way in the world. Maybe he comes back to visit Sevenwaters more often than in canon, since Lady Oonagh never murdered his animals and cursed him in this version of events.
Sorcha is another tricky one… I suppose she would get married when she turns 16. Either Lord Colum would arrange a suitable marriage for her, or the Fair Folk meddle and ensure that she falls for a Briton in this timeline as well. Or actually, since Oonagh never arrives at Sevenwaters Sorcha’s brothers don’t forcibly remove her from Father Brien’s place and she finishes healing Simon. So I could see Sorcha falling for Simon, and the child of the prophecy could be kickstarted that way.
(In fact, I feel like originally the Fair Folk intended Sorcha to fall in love with Simon and eventually have babies with him, but then Lady Oonagh interfered and changed everything.)
