"The Serpent, as it was known in Upper Lusatia, was a dragon. At night, it would fly over the rooftops in the form of a green ray. If someone called out to it, it would enter the house through the chimney. There, it would spit out whatever was requested. In return, it demanded good food and gentle treatment from the hostess. If he was missing something, he would sometimes put a "red rooster" on the roof of the house."

In 1410, the lands (or mark) of Bautzen were first referred to as Upper Lusatia. Shortly after, the Margraviate of Upper Lusatia was established. To distinguish between the two, the previous mark of Lusatia was renamed Lower Lusatia.

In 1635, the Margraviates of Upper and Lower Lusatia became dependent territories with their own class structure within the Electorate of Saxony.

The earliest mention of Sorbian paganism is in the "Chronicle" of Thietmar of Merseburg. It refers to a sacred grove that served as a place of worship. However, we do not know where this grove was located or what gods were worshipped there.

The silence of earlier sources about Sorbian gods has led to later chroniclers at least inventing their own gods. Konrad Bothe, the author of the "Saxon Chronicle" of 1492, is particularly famous for this.

According to him, the Slavs in the Harz region worshipped Flins, whose idol was destroyed by Duke Lothair. The very image of the idol, as well as other alleged Slavic gods, shows that this is pure fantasy on the part of the chronicler.

The same can be said about another Lusatian pseudo-god, Krod (on the foto), who was joined by Jutrobog in the 16th century and even by the goddess Cika in the 17th century.
