Oh my god I love this question! Thank you. Personally I was drawn to him because of all the horrible things that happened to him, and his great potential.

Some cool ideas or headcanons I have are:

●He could have been revived like Cinderpelt was because they died in the same battle against the badgers. (Or they could have expanded on this sorta useless reincarnation plot using him somehow)

●He could have gone to Starclan-saw that it was possible to live again like Cinderpelt and become bitter. Then being guided by Thistleclaw (his close kin), become evil! He was also shown to be friends with Ashfur his "half brother," and they could have some cool evil duo arc idk.

●Using Sootfur-and Sorreltail and Rainwhisker-they could showcase how nursery queens like Ferncloud help kits or apprentices when their moms die. I think nursery queens like Ferncloud are clowned on for being "useless" and this could help show that they do have a really important role!

●I also like the idea he is close to many in the clan: Brightheart, Graystripe-his half-brother, and Ferncloud for being parental figures to him when his parents died, Spiderleg and Shrewpaw for growing up together, Ashfur and Thornclaw for a little friend clique, and especially Rainwhisker and Sorreltail because they're his siblings and I love close sibling dynamics. It also would make it way more sad when he dies lol. (I plan on making a post in depth with his relationships because surprisingly-even with being a backround character-he has pretty interesting relationships with many cats as shown in the text)

●I like how he's very open to other headcanons because he died young, never had a mate or kits, and, unfortunately, is a clean slate.

Unable to bear the thought of losing Brambleclaw now, Squirrelflight was about to follow him when she heard a cat wailing somewhere close by. Staring around the hollow, she caught a glimpse of Sootfur, his black pelt barely visible in the shadows. She could tell he was badly wounded, because he was dragging himself along the ground as if he couldn’t use his back legs.

“Sootfur, over here!” she called.

The black warrior raised his head, too confused by pain to know where the cry had come from. Squirrelflight darted out to him and managed to nudge him to his paws, letting him lean on her shoulder as she guided him back to the screen of brambles.

“You can get out this way,” she meowed, gesturing with her tail to the route up the wall.

Sootfur blinked drops of blood out of his eyes. “Can’t . . . can’t climb . . .” he gasped.

“You’ve got to!”

Squirrelflight pushed him over to the wall. Sootfur clawed desperately, but both his back legs were broken and he couldn’t use them to thrust himself upward. He managed to haul him-self a few tail-lengths from the ground, then slipped back down again with a shrill cry of pain.

At the same moment a badger appeared, breaking down the bramble screen and lunging at Sootfur. Squirrelflight glimpsed healed scars running along its side; her claws flexed instinctively with the memory of tearing through that coarse black fur. This must be the female they had driven out of their territory. For a moment she locked gazes with the furious creature. To think I felt sorry for you! she thought. Do we really deserve this?

Sootfur lifted his head, snarling, and lashed out with one forepaw while Squirrelflight leapt on the badger from behind, biting down hard on its hind leg. It flung her off as if she were a fly; she crashed into the rocks and lay stunned for a couple of heartbeats. When she managed to scramble up again, the badger was lumbering off into the darkness, leaving the black warrior lying ominously still.

"Sootfur, no!” Squirrelflight staggered over to him. There was a new gash in his throat and his eyes gazed sightlessly into the sky.

Sootfur officially recognized on the warrior cat's website as the 4th most brutal death in Warrior Cats.

The paragraph says, "Sootfur isn't the only cat to have died at a badger's paws, or even the only cat to suffer that fate within the same battle, but there is a particular brutality to his death that earns him a place on this list. During the battle, Squirrelflight found Sootfur wailing and dragging himself along the ground, both hind legs broken. She tried to lead him to safety out of camp, but without the use of his back legs and in so much pain, he couldn't climb his way up the wall He could only fall painfully back to the ground just in time for another badger to appear and tear out his throat. His agonized crawling and last, useless try at an escape, only to fall into the badger's jaws, certainly earns him his spot on this list - especially when one considers that his mother Willowpelt had died to save him from another badger only a few seasons before."

Sootfur is described as a light gray tom as seen below, and is notably darker compared to his brother, Rainwhisker.

His mom is Willowpelt, a light gray she-cat and his father is Whitestorm, a fully white tom. This could impact his genetics but seriously Warrior Cats doesn't care about that. Besides, he could still be dilute or not because of what Whitestorm is hiding under his white.

In his official appearances his color remains relatively the same. In the James Barry version he is noticeably darker when looked at in next to the new graphic novels. (See below)

This seems to differ in all of his appearances where he is changing between being a bluish gray to a brownish gray. Soot, however, is not blue tinted at all and follows the light gray description he carries.

This is very accurate to his website family tree icon!

It is also true soot can be black, and I think during his death scene in Twilight and vigil scene in Sunset this is what the authors referred to instead of his allegiances description. This causes a bit of a question on his color, even though it is dark during the battle he is specifically called black pelted. Also in the following book, Sunset, his body is called gray-black three times.

The warrior cats website acknowledges this diffence in description by having two differing sprites:

I feel like it is just a commonly accepted fact that he is a light gray tom, because in most fanarts I see he stays this light gray, and seldom is blue tinted or black. I think this is because a big thing about his color is the contrast between his brother who is darker. I am unsure where the idea he is a black tom came from besides his death scene and body...

Pick whatever color you want when drawing him, though! I love looking at ALL of people’s designs especially when he looks like a stupid little idiot, so the color doesn't matter much.
