You lie on your back on your bed, flipping through the pages of Peter Pan. This time, you just wanted to lookat the pictures. It was always this way now. You missed him so much it seemed to hurt.
He gave you the book the day he left, along with a jacket, and told you it was so you could smell it and think
That day, though, you cried long and hard when he left. That was about a year ago now.
He told you he'd call every day. That's when you begged your daddy to get you your own phone line for yourroom.
He didn't really know what it was for. He didn't know about Michael, so you came up with some lie, but youdon't remember what it was anymore.
You pushed it somewhere into the back of your mind, and when the phone rang for the first time that night, heat crept up your body. Your cheeks swelled with the slightest hint of pink coating your brown skin as youanswered the phone.
JANUARY 16, 1975 (Your POV)
It had been five years since that first call, and a lot had changed.
You and Michael were now sixteen, and safe to say you two were still stuck at the hip. You still felt that same familiar hole sink into your stomach anytime someone talked about him or whenever you heard his music.
His new album had been released today, Forever, Michael, and you had already listened to it several times.
You were proud of it. You would've made it twenty if your mother hadn't dragged you to the store.
But you guessed it was all worth it because you did get a really cute top you'd been eyeing for months on end.
Then again, not so much, 'cause you didn't get to hear Michael's sweet, sweet voice. Oh, how you loved it. It was so soothing ,very much so that it could put a lion to sleep—better yet, you.
Then you're quickly pulled from your thoughts when the phone sitting on your nightstand rings. You turn over on your bed annoyed, going from your back to your stomach as you reach for it, the pink cord scratching in your hand.
You don't bother checking who it is, figuring it's just one of those scammers trying to sell you something agin that you sure as hell do not want, so you automatically go off without even thinking putting the phone up to your ear already pissed.
"Look, I do not want any of the shit you are selling." You take a deep breath. "Now, do not call here again if ya know what's good fa ya."
"Oh yeah? Now I can't dig that. This really hurts my feelings, especially 'cause I haven't heard your beautiful voice in so long." He giggles.
It’s was like magic the way you’re whole mood shifted
"Mickey!" you squeal excitedly before quickly calming down considering it's late at night as well as your whole house is sleeping—well, except you of course.
A smile spreads across his face on the other end.
"Hello to you too, pretty baby. How are you?"
Your cheeks turn a dark red, blending into your caramel-brown skin from the mention of the nickname. "Good. Well, much better now that I'm talking to you."
"What do you mean, good?" You lie on your stomach in bed, the phone pressed to your ear as you wrap the cord around your arm.
He crosses his right leg over his left, his back pressed against the couch. He preferred to call you in his room that way his family wouldn't disrupt him.
More like Randy flirting with you while shooting a shit-eating grin at Michael that would just piss him off, making him simply just considering letting Randy just have you.
Oh, but that last part was a fib. He wouldn't never let someone else have you. Not his brothers, his sisters, or even some schmuck in Gary who tried so hard to get your attention.
"Well, I don't know. I can't hear your annoying voice all the time now," he jokes with a sigh.
You tilt your head a bit, glancing over your shoulder to check if the door is locked.
You loved your daddy, but he'd lose it if he found out the whole reason you wanted your own phone in your room was to talk to some "random boy."
He didn't care if it was Michael Joseph Jackson. As he'd say, "No niggas good enough for his baby girl." Your mommy knew about Michael, though.
After checking over your shoulder, you turn your attention back to Michael.
"Oh, but didn't you just say my beautiful voice?" you tease.
He goes silent a smile creeping up his cheeks.
"Oh, can't a brother change his mind?!"
"Mmm, how about a..." You drag out the a as if you're thinking, even though you've already made up your mind. "No." You laugh.
Michael kisses his teeth letting his top row of teeth graze over his bottom lip, staying silent so he can listen to your laughter. It was as gentle as church bells to his ears.
"Why aren't you saying anything, Mickey?" You suck in a breath trying to calm down your laughter, tears gathering in your eyes.
He quickly snaps out of his trance.
"Is this how you laugh with all the fellas at school?" he questions , the intention behind the question clear.
"Yup, like Jambo and Charlie." You giggle jokingly.
Expecting Michael to laugh too, to add a joke or something about the girls all over him, but instead his tone turns sour when he speaks, making you rethink your answer to his question.
"Oh yeah? Then how 'bout y’go talk with them then?" His voice is cold now. "And stop wasting my time. These long calls are expensive."
Then the line goes dead, followed by a beep.
You panic, quickly sitting up and unraveling the phone cord from your arm. You place the phone back on the hook before quickly picking it back up and dialing his number back.
It rings once than twice before another beep sounds.
You have no clue what you did wrong.
You thought you two were joking.
You didn't think he was serious. Hell, you weren't.
And now he won't even pick up the phone so you can explain yourself.
