We Say Jesus Christ, Peace be upon Him to show honor and respect for him as a great prophet of Allah SWT,
Muslims say "Peace be upon Him" for Jesus (known as 'Isa in Arabic) to show honor and respect for him as a great prophet of God, as described in the Quran. This phrase, "alayhi as-salām," is an expression of piety and blessings for the prophet, not because he needs it, but to honor him properly. Muslims regard Jesus as a significant figure who delivered divine guidance, similar to other revered prophets like Abraham and Moses.
Significance in Islam
Prophetic Status:
In Islam, Jesus is considered a great messenger and prophet sent by God, similar to other prophets recognized in Islam.
Honor and Respect:
The phrase "Peace be upon Him" (or "alayhi as-salām" in Arabic) is a customary expression of respect, reverence, and blessings for prophets in Islamic tradition.
Spiritual Connection:
By saying this phrase, Muslims are invoking God's blessings upon Jesus, and by extension, seeking blessings for themselves by remembering and honoring him.
Biblical Connection:
The Quran mentions many aspects of Jesus's life, including his miraculous birth from a virgin, his role as the Messiah, and his future return.
Not a Claim of Divinity
While Jesus is highly revered, Muslims do not believe he is the son of God, as Christians do. Instead, they see him as a righteous servant and messenger of God, not divine himself.
A Common Islamic Practice
The practice of saying "Peace be upon him" extends to other prophets in Islam, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad, reflecting a shared respect for these holy figures.
Jesus in Quran: In the Quran, Jesus (known as ʿĪsā) is revered as a prophet, the Christ, and the Messiah, born miraculously to the Virgin Mary. He is considered a unique messenger from God, who performed miracles, and is referred to as "God's word" and "a spirit from God". However, the Quran denies his divinity and rejects the concept of his crucifixion, stating that he was raised to God. On Judgment Day, Jesus will deny any claim to godhood, affirming God's absolute oneness (Tawhid). Jesus' Identity and Role: Prophet and Messenger: The Quran emphasizes Jesus as a prophet, a messenger of God, and a man.
The Messiah: He is known as the Messiah (Al-Masih), a title meaning "the anointed".
"God's Word" and "Spirit": The Quran identifies Jesus as "God's word" and "a spirit from God," which entered Mary to give birth to him.
Key Aspects of His Life in the Quran
Virgin Birth: The Quran affirms the virginal conception and birth of Jesus to Mary.
Miracles: He is described as having performed numerous miracles.
Rejection of Divinity: The Quran firmly denies that Jesus is divine or the son of God, promoting the absolute oneness of God (Tawhid).
No Crucifixion: The Quran states that Jesus was not crucified but was raised to God.
His Role in Islamic Eschatology
Judgment Day: On the Day of Judgment, Jesus will deny having claimed divinity or having asked people to worship him and his mother as gods.
Muslim by Definition: Muslims believe Jesus was a Muslim, meaning he was one who submitted to God's will.

The People of the Book demand that you ˹O Prophet˺ bring down for them a revelation in writing from heaven.[1] They demanded what is even greater than this from Moses, saying, “Make Allah visible to us!” So a thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf for worship after receiving clear signs. Still We forgave them for that ˹after their repentance˺ and gave Moses compelling proof.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[1] i.e., they demanded the Quran to be revealed all at once in writing similar to the Tablets of Moses. This demand is refuted in 25:32.

We raised the Mount over them ˹as a warning˺ for ˹breaking˺ their covenant and said, “Enter the gate ˹of Jerusalem˺ with humility.” We also warned them, “Do not break the Sabbath,” and took from them a firm covenant.

— Abdullah Muhammad Basmeih

˹They were condemned˺ for breaking their covenant, rejecting Allah’s signs, killing the prophets unjustly, and for saying, “Our hearts are unreceptive!”[1]—it is Allah Who has sealed their hearts for their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few—
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[1] Their hearts are unreceptive because they claim they have enough knowledge already.

and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so.[1] Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever—only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him.
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[1] The popular belief among Muslims is that a conspiracy was made to kill Jesus, Allah made the main culprit who betrayed Jesus look exactly like Jesus, then he was crucified in Jesus’ place. Jesus was raised safe and sound to the heavens. Muslims also believe in the second coming of Jesus (ﷺ).

Every one of the People of the Book will definitely believe in him before his death.[1] And on the Day of Judgment Jesus will be a witness against them.

O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes regarding your faith; say nothing about Allah except the truth.[1] The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah and the fulfilment of His Word through Mary and a spirit ˹created by a command˺ from Him.[2] So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, “Trinity.” Stop!—for your own good. Allah is only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah is sufficient as a Trustee of Affairs.

[1] The Jews are warned against denying Jesus as the Messiah, while Christians are warned against calling Jesus Allah.
[2] i.e., Jesus was created by Allah’s Word “Be!” and he was, and life was breathed into Jesus by the holy spirit (the angel Gabriel) at the command of Allah.
