About Songdo, yes, he is very out of line by referring to Samdal as something that Yongpil stole from him, ๐ฉ behaviour, but honestly this kind of resentment towards Yongpil was coming from miles away and Samdal is just the tip of the iceberg. AND the situation is more nuanced than one may think.
Since the beginning of the series everyone casually mentions Songdo as someone who was poor and everyone was so nice to him, see: Samdal commenting many times how she always defended him, his own mother saying Yongpil always gave him his toys to play. His now favourable economic position, symbolised by the expensive car, is sometimes lightly made fun of, (which is fine! Theyโre friends) and Samdal is quick to say with the familiarity of old friendship โgive me a ride remember how I was always there for youโ. And letโs be honest, Yongpil is rightfully, (deservedly!) the townโs most beloved son, everyone loves him and wishes the best for him. I can imagine Songdoโs mother treating Yongpil especially nice ever since his mother died. โฆ but letโs see it from Songdoโs eyes. Everyone was so nice to you, and you had to be fine with being the only one who didnโt leave the island in hopes for a better future. Your hard work is appreciated, yes, but taken from granted by your own family because you have a brother whoโs selfish and terrible for the both of you. You did the best with the cards you were given, but deep down you think everyone prefers Yongpil, who is so talented, he should have gone to work in Seoul, who is so sad, he lost the girl he loved. Everyone seems to cheer for Yongpil to the point you wonder if itโs okay for you to wish for things, and the one time you tell yourself โno, this time Iโll try, I wonโt be niceโ, the universe and your mum tell you you stand no chance, it was always going to be Yongpil. Come on, you guys really think itโs only about Samdal, or only about the best toys and being class president? Itโs the culmination of all the tiny hurts he received because he always had to settle and he was never praised like Yongpil for, for example, staying in samdal. His behaviour is not correct, and Yongpil doesnโt deserve the resentment, but Songdoโs actions are very much understandable, his character is well-written. And I think he deserves some slack for being a bit of an asshole for the first time in 30 years of being a devoted son/friend
Location | Songdo, Incheon, South Korea Songdo City is a planned 'smart city' built on 6 sq.km of artificial land just 65 km west of Seoul, South Korea's Capital City. Songdo is one of South Korea's answers to the urban development of business district like the ones in Dubai and Shanghai. It is moreover one of the largest private real estate development ever done in history. The city includes high-rise buildings, architectural hallmarks such as a copy of the Central Park and Venice's waterway, 40% green area, bike and walking paths. It is a smart city due to its tunnel vacuum waste system (and thus no trash trucks are seen), complies to LEED requirements, gets its energy from a local heating facility, and places emphasis on alternative transportation to privatised vehicular movement. The city is an example of an Low-Carbon Green Growth city, as introduced by the former president Lee Myung Bak who saw a need for more sustainable development across the entire country.
