My apartment has a balcony, but I never use it. I'm on the 17th floor and terrified to go out there. But sometimes on nice cool nights I'll sit in the doorway and close my eyes and let the night flow over me.

That sounds all poetic but it's the best way I can describe it. The cool air, the darkness, the sounds of the city at night. 

I love living in a fairly big city, don't get me wrong. But when it comes to most cities I find they're like paintings. They're beautiful at the proper distance but get too close and the cracks show. The sounds of the city are like that. From my balcony it's a hum of people and cars and small bits of music from other apartments. Up close it's swearing and jerks being jerks and loud and oppressive. 

I've experienced nights like this in the country too. The sounds are different there, obviously, but in someways the same. The hum comes from bugs instead of cars and people, the overlapping music is from the waves of the lake and the breeze in the trees instead of TV's and stereos. I also prefer it from a safe distance.
