First Tumblr fanfic... Kinds nervous..
OKAY!! I am posting this fanfic on Tumblr. I'm not exactly aware of how fanfic culture is on here since I read ao3 mostly, so I will TRY my best to tag(?) appropriately.
This is a So'lek x Tamtey fanfic, taking place about a year after AFOP:FTA. They do have an established relationship and are mates, this is all fluff though.
And heads up, this fanfic is about pregnancy. I'm saying this because I am friends with some people where pregnancy makes them uncomfortable and they enjoy my writing.
Also, I did TRY my hardest to proofread, but it's currently 11:21 p.m and I got work tomorrow so..
I tried a grammar check website but it was lowkey janky and slow.
For so long, he was used to being alone.
Eating alone, sleeping alone, and waking up alone.
Waking up, and her face greeting him with that loving and lazy smile; gone?
So’lek isn't sure why it's so weird.
For seventeen years, So’lek was alone. And then Tamtey came into his life, and stolen his heart.
And now he struggles to wake up without his mate’s loving face.
And so’lek is asleep in the fork of a tree— or, at least trying to.
He had gone out after Teylan had reached out about a nearby RDA base causing trouble at the edge of the Zeswa lands, poisoning the water nearby a hunting camp, which had caused some of them to get sick.
Tamtey had wanted to come along as well, but she hadn't been feeling the best lately, so So’lek kissed her forehead and headed out, promising to be back as soon as he could as he left her on their hammock with some stew softly boiling for when she was ready to eat.
The mission took longer than expected, the trip had tired out Iley, and it had begun to rain heavily. So So’lek had set up camp, and told Tamtey he had to stop, that he loved her, and would come back as soon as possible.
But even as So’lek closed his eyes, he couldn't rest.
His mind wandered, dancing in between memories of his past, worrying about Iley, and mostly worrying about Tamtey.
Had Tamtey eaten the food he had set out for her before leaving? Is she sleeping? Is she safe?
And most of all, what was causing her illness? So’lek mulled over the question.
Tamtey’s always tired now, and she struggles to keep any kind of fatty meat down.
So'lek worries, as a few weeks ago, Tamtey had been shot with a bullet during a mission when the RDA was attempting to create a new drill site in Waterway Valley.
‘Did it contain a poison that is changing her?’ So’lek questioned at first. But Teylan and Tamtey just stared at So’lek and said that it was impossible to develop something like that.
It worries him. The thought of losing his mate; he’s already lost so much, and after all the trouble that he went through already? The Mangkwan, the RDA, he had fought both for Tamtey. And he still fights the RDA, and So’lek will always fight them if it means keeping her safe.
Isn't that why he’s in this predicament right now??
Taking on a mission as Tamtey slept, even if it meant leaving her when she’s unwell?
So’lek looked down and sighed.
Sleep would not come tonight. No matter how much he wrestled his thoughts and adjusted his body.
After checking that Iley was okay to fly, he got on and started the hour long journey from the edge of the Aranahe lands, to the other side to go back to his and Tamtey’s camp in the boundless range.
By the time So’lek came back, the rain had gone away, light was streaming through the canopy of the forest and reflecting off of the plethora of streams and rivers and lakes. Animals were rising as So’lek mounted Iley on his perch on the cliff, and walked to the hammock where Tamtey and him slept every night; curled together in a cocoon of protection.
So’lek’s blood ran cold as he registered that piece of information.
Nothing’s different, nothing had been knocked over or ransacked, and there no signs of struggle. Plus, their weapons lay untouched like the night before. But it's too early for her to have already gone out.
He checked everywhere: the small waterfall where they collect water, the cooking station, the aim dummies, the crashed ship that Tamtey would escape to when the nightmares came. He had even checked the small hut where Telisi hid when Tamtey was captured!
And his blood ran cold when he noticed Telisi wasn't out either.
“Iley!!” So’lek cried out, running as fast as he could to grab his long bow and mount his Ikran.
Not when their lives together have only just begun.
She wasn't at the Aranahe dwelling, not any of the hunting camps, and neither Teylan or Ri’nela had seen her all morning either.
And as So’lek was on the borders of the Aranahe lands, getting ready to cross into the Clouded Forest; he saw Telisi.
Alone, quietly drinking from a stream.
But So’lek had never in his life been more scared seeing an Ikran alone without their rider.
“Telisi!!” He practically jumped off of Iley as he ran to Telisi to check for injuries, blood, ANYTHING that could have shown signs of a struggle or that Tamtey was hurt.
“Where’s Tamtey?? Where is she!?” So’lek begged, grabbing Telisi to make the Ikran look at him.
So’lem whipped around, seeing Tamtey… Unharmed…?
“Where were you!?” So’lek barked, relief turning into anger.
“So’lek I—” Tamtey took a step closer and So’lek hissed, his tail beginning to whip around in anger.
“Why didn't you radio me!? You can't just leave me Tamtey, I thought you were-—”
That made So’lek shut up.
“What?” His tail went still, and So'lek stared, which made Tamtey shift, and start to talk fast.
“I went to visit Anufi. I needed to see what was wrong with me, and she said it sounded like I’m pregnant, and I've been—” Tamtey was practically vomiting out her words. Scratching her arm in the same way Teylan does when they both get nervous or scared.
A habit learned from their time in TAP.
So’lek’s voice was calm as he stopped her with a raise of his hand.
“How sure are you?" So’lek asked, and she wouldn't look up.
“Anufi was pretty sure.” Tamtey answered, eyes focused on the ground.
“I didn't ask about Anufi. I'm asking about you. How sure are you? Do you trust Anufi’s judgement that you truly are pregnant?” So’lek asked, eyebrows raising in the way they do when So’lek is asking someone for their opinion.
Tamtey took a breath and exhaled it out, finally bringing her eyes up to meet So'lek’s.
“I'm sure.” She responded.
So’lek stared for a few seconds, before walking over and pressing his forehead into her’s, slowly dragging it down until he was on his knees and his forehead was pressed against where their child was being kept.
“Ma Yawntu..” He whispered, shakily moving his head away and replacing it with his hand, ever so gently applying pressure as if one wrong move would break Tamtey.
And for a while, silence was all that was between them.
No words spoken, just the sounds of all the animals awakening, the stream flowing behind them, and the leaves dancing from the wind. The light escaped from behind Polyphemus and shined onto Pandora more and more.
And still, neither So’lek or Tamtey moved.
“Let's go home.” Tamtey finally whispered, bringing her arms around So’lek, finding their home in his hair. Wrapping themselves in his braids and strands.
Home. To that cave all the way in the boundless range. Where so many nights took place in between the two. Sleeping, arguing, eating, laughing.
Eventually, So’lek looked up and nodded while he rose up to his feet once more.
Tamtey noticed his eyes, how glazed over they were, like he was trying to not cry.
A rare sight from such a grumpy man.
So’lek pulled her in and just held his mate, listened to her breathing and smelled her scent on her hair.
“Let’s go home then, my Sarentu.”
