Out of all the Beatles solo careers who's do you like more???
You can so a first, second, third and fourth place if you want!
I think for me George and John are tied for me cause I listen to them way more than Paul and Ringos solo stuff. But I think George and John are a tie, then it's Ringo and then Paul??
Hmm, this got me thinking!
Well, I think I’d have to say Paul is first place. His work with Wings is UNBELIEVABLY good, I just can’t resist. I think George and John are tied for second. I really like Living In The Material Word, George Harrison, and All Things Must Pass, but oh my GOD Mind Games, Plastic Ono Band, and Double Fantasy are so good!
shamefully, it’s have to put Ringo’s work last. I just haven’t got around to listening to it. Any recommendations?
"Sometimes you scare me, but I come around to you - I'll say hello, hello, hello, hello, and find a way to scare you too"
Well, I've decided to pay close attention to Curt's solo stuff from the 90s now. 'Soul on Board', an album Curt wants to erase from his memory and which felt more like obligation to his label than a true labour of love, is a wealth of amazing songs, especially lyrics wise. So I don't think he made it without passion, it just flopped and became a bastard in his eyes lol.
I've already posted about Curt's singles from this album, you can find the posts under the same hashtags. Very interesting choice of not only singles but also the B-sides *and there are no coincidences*
I actually thought all those songs are about his ex-wife, Lynne, and didn't really think much of the album, listened a few times to some of them and that was it. But lately it's hit me that it might be actually about something totally different. Why writing songs about your ex-wife you divorced so many years ago when you're in a happy new relationship? Doesn't make much sense, innit?
But those songs are very similar in themes, it's definitely a concept album. It's introspective and melancholic. It's about losing, about wanting to move on, about being scared but hopeful, about wanting to reconnect.
And while I do believe he wrote 'Beautiful to me' about Frances, all the other songs are about his newfound freedom after leaving the band with all the pros and cons connected with that situation, his need to have faith and guidance in his life, and yes, about Roland.
THIS ALBUM SCREAMS ROLAND!
Found a page with wonderful explanation to the meaning of each song, put the links to each to make it easier to check. I don't want to copy/paste everything, otherwise this post would take forever to scroll lol. They are very beautiful and really helped me understand a lot of stuff between the lines.
It's crazy how overlooked this whole thing is. They truly went through divorce, Roland made it very clear how much he suffered and how angry he was. Curt suffered too, just differently. It's not only 'Sun King', cigarettes and fancy cars. Now going through all those songs feels like reading Curt's diary.
Like he said later, he was so done he wanted to be as far as possible from Roland and TFF, so he left England for America. Those feelings couldn't be taken lightly, and it's obvious from the lyrics on this album he carried everything with him anyway.
SOUL ON BOARD (1993)
Soul on Board A soul-searching song, he wants to find himself and be healed. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Soul_on_Board
Calling Out Again, he's out in the wild and needs direction, a new beginning and purpose in life. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Calling_Out
Beautiful to Me Could be about Frances actually. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Beautiful_to_Me
Wonder Child Again, a similar theme to the songs at the beginning. He's on his own, independent, but lonely and scared. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Wonder_Child
Words Curt is speaking directly to Roland here, totally. He wants Roland to be honest and fearless and actually take a risk to open up, instead of just saying empty words and avoiding a real communication. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Words
I Will Be There Oh, it's like Curt tells Roland that if he ever changes his beliefs when they don't work out and seeks his help, he will offer his love and support because he knows R's struggles. To me it's a clear message that Curt left the band but was ready to comfort Roland as a friend if he wanted him to. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/I_Will_Be_There
No One Knows Your Name The alternative title should be I love You but I'm lost ;) I think Curt is very direct here why things didn't work out between them. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/No_One_Knows_Your_Name
Rain Life struggles again. He needs love that's more profound than a romantic relationship, something more like faith. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Rain
Come the Revolution Social theme, about freedom and reason and faith *again* https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Come_the_Revolution
Still in Love with You Painful breakup and not really ready to move on yet. That baby part makes me think of the band, that was their baby actually. https://sonichits.com/video/Curt_Smith/Still_in_Love_With_You
BTW. He thanked Roland in the liner notes, towards the end, but still there :)

Can we talk about the fact that as
soon as the Stevie Nicks concert
ended and the crowd of people
started dissolving, they played
Christine McVie’s
Got a Hold On Me,
and I think that is beautiful!
