If you have it available in your area please go to polyamory group support, book clubs, and meetups! Or start those yourself!
In my experience even if non monogamous people use labels to describe their type of non-monogamy it's always juuuust a little bit different than what you thought that meant. I don't think they're lying (unfortunately, you'll still run into liars and cheaters just like in monogamy) I think that human communication is just flawed in the way that it takes a lot longer to convey and understand ideas than we expect.
For example, what might look like kitchen table polyamory to one person might not to another. In my ideal kitchen table polycule we share what resources we can, help with childcare, share meals, have an open-door policy, hold regular group meetings, and may or may not live together. What is your definition of KTP?
You also get to observe new and well-established polyam couples, triads, and 'cules interacting with each other during these events. You get a little more insight into what wouldn't work for you and boundaries you would want to put up.
I have started two long-term relationships, two short-term relationships, and about a dozen platonic friendships by attending local polyam events.
Having a community as a polyamorous person is so important! We face discrimination in our jobs, families, schools, etc. It can be very isolating. You'll need support!
(I have not added therapy as a support source here because it is inaccessible to many and it is difficult to find truly queer affirming therapists)
