“Snake! That’s not Master Miller! Master Miller’s body was just discovered at his home. He’s been dead for at least three days.” The funeral was closed-casket. Not many showed up either. Hal had gone with David to support his newfound friend. Miller’s ex-wife and daughter were there too, then Mei Ling, and Campbell. The man was a recluse in his cabin in Alaska. It had been only him and his huskies after David went into service. Miller had left no funeral arrangements, probably assuming that no one would bother to show up. It was up to David to arrange everything. What a bastard. He was grateful for Hal, who had funeral arranging experience, and he refused to leave David’s side. Grief had finally started to settle in, now that David was not busying himself with everything. Now sitting beside Hal in a small Alaskan church, the pianist playing ‘Amazing Grace.’ Miller did not believe in God. David had taken whatever funds Miller had left, the funds that he had been slowly draining for beer money and whatever else he did by himself. David was angry. At himself. He could have visited more. At Miller. The least he could have done was arrange a damn funeral by now. At Campbell. He could have done something. Anything to prevent what had happened. At his ‘brother,’ Liquid. He killed the only man he ever had a real connection to. Softer hands interlaced with his own. It was Hal. Gentle eyes behind rounded glasses, an awkward smile that managed to warm David’s heart every single time. He is one of the first friends he has ever had. Though he has really only ever known Miller. Hal was such a sweet man. A man who did not deserve what this life has given him. It was admirable, having gone through so much, and yet, here he was, never mad at the world. He still saw the good in it and still wanted to make it a better place. David has never known anyone so naturally good in his life. Hal did not say a word. He did not need to. Not to David. They both just knew what the other was saying. Miller was not a perfect man. Far from it. Especially in his older years. David could feel the sadness that radiated from the man, even without seeing his eyes, which were constantly concealed by shades. Miller had a wife and a child. Yet, he divorced her and never attempted to get visitation with his daughter. He had the opportunity to move on the best he could from the life that had burned him, yet he was constantly stuck in the past, ruining any relationship that tried to come after. It felt like Miller never saw David as his own person. Always the son of Big Boss, his shadow. A means to an end, to bring back the man who burned him. Despite hating him, he wanted nothing more than to have him back through his son.
