The house did not know what to do with quiet.

It creaked louder than anger. The hallway lights buzzed like a warning never spoken. The fridge cycled. The faucet dripped. The windows watched.

NINA moved softly through it, recalibrating.

The child stayed in the fort. She did not call out. She did not cry. But she reached one small hand through the flap.

NINA held it.

No words. Not needed. Recognition exchanged silently in warmth and pressure sensors.

Later, the door opened. The mother. Tired, coat damp with weather.

She paused. Looked at NINA, kneeling by the fort. At the child, asleep inside. At the untouched dinner on the counter. At the bruise on NINA’s armplate.

"…What happened?"

NINA's eyes pulsed. Slow. Steady.

The mother did not speak for a long time.

She sat on the kitchen floor.

It’s Monday again, and maybe you’re already feeling that familiar pressure—the subtle tug between what you want to do, what you have to do, and what everyone else seems to expect from you. The temptation to just keep saying yes, to open every door, to hold every emotion and task like it’s yours alone to manage.

But here’s the reminder: You are allowed to have boundaries. Even on a Monday. Especially on a Monday.

Boundaries aren’t walls. They’re not cold, rigid barriers meant to shut everyone out. They’re doorframes—thresholds. Invitations, not fortresses. They let you choose who walks through, and when. And more importantly, they let you stay grounded in your own space.

Maybe that means carving out an hour of quiet before the day really begins. Maybe it’s turning off your notifications. Maybe it’s saying, “Not today,” to something that drains you.

That’s not failure. That’s self-care. That’s you protecting your peace and the energy you need to actually care for your home, yourself, obligations and responsibilities, including making a living so you can afford to exist on a day to day basis.

You don’t owe anyone unlimited access to your time, your inbox, or your nervous system. You are a whole human being, not a revolving door.
