...should get off these major, corporate-controlled social media platforms with sketchy algorithms and egregious content policies and create their own independent discussion sites. This would draw traffic (and thus power and revenue) away from these tech billionaires that mean to do society harm.
Moreover, these independent sites could be linked by a bit of free, open source code that works like a discussion timeline but could be embedded on any website and allows the user to manage it as they see fit.
This way, users can engage in discussion and content sharing directly from their own website under their rules, not from some tech overlord's platform that has a personal agenda they wish to drive and manipulate.
The original internet meant everyone to have their own website, not to be corralled and controlled like sheep on data farms.
Will this alienate people who can't set up their own basic website? Maybe.
But if you can't focus enough to learn to set up your own basic HTML website, maybe you shouldn't be online talking about politics anyway.
How do we make Tumblr communities as active as Reddit communities? Idk. I'm asking people
Normally I am tough on social media, but Tumblr seems to have everything you'd want if you like to have a social media presence.
If you want to blog, you can blog.
If you want to have a Reddit style community, you can have a Reddit style community.
If you want to use Tumblr to post short, tweet style comments, you can.
If Instagram type posting is more your thing, you can post Instagram style posts all you like.
So what's not to like?
More importantly, why is Tumblr not as active as the other platforms mentioned and how can we boost activity here?
I'd really like to get into some deep discussions and debates here but the activity in terms of post-and-reply exchange seems limited.
