the inky texas summer night cools down outside of the hotel. inside, you’re lying on the fluffy hotel bed, the coolness of the air conditioning dawning on your skin, a flimsy paperback between your fingers as you listen to how ferran fiddles with the lock of the bathroom.

when he steps out, a waft of shower steam pours out with him. he’s only clad in some old, jersey shorts, a little loose around his thighs, and simply his towel around his neck, stray droplets of water pooling on his collarbones, his golden skin illuminated under the dim hotel lights.

It was another normal day for the Mexican national team

They’re warm-ups were already marinated into the grass as their boots hit the grass and voices echoing across the pitch

Everyone had the same focus

England

Nothing else matter exactly nothing except winning

Everyone was locked in…except one person

Gilberto Mora…

He usually is always there head in the game but today he wasn’t fully there * he would glancing down at the grass between drills and his jaw a bit tight* 

Not in the drills like usual

Not in the passes

Not in the moment like how he always is

His mind was somewhere else entirely which caught the eye of his teammates 

“qué le pasa?” whispers came from his teammates as mora passed by them

- 1 day ago - FLASHBACK

Two months

That’s how long they had been together

Not long

But enough to mean something to both of them

Dating should be simple but not when one of them is part of a national team and the other is photographer

At first it started off fine

Then became distance soon after followed the routine of not really texting and became normal too both of them until it became silence between them

-FLASHBACK – MEDIA DAY-

Recently a new PR girl had joined the staff she was still learning, still adjusting to everything 

“Okay, mic check — can you lean a bit closer?” she said politely * as she was checking her clipboard*

Mora nodded

“Yeah, are we good?

“Perfect. Hold still for a second”

She stepped closer to fix the mic *she was careful with her hands adjusting standing just a little too close without realizing*

Too close not intentional Just work nothing too special 

“Alright now look here and answer the question again” she added

Mora let out a small laugh 

* and without hesitation a slight smirk trying to stay professional*

Mora: Mmm your a strict one I see

She smiled I have to be this is for the team account

Someone off to the side was recording.

“Yo this is actually good content” one of the players said

The PR girl adjusted the angle again *tilting her head focused on framing the camera on him*

“Okay one more take”

Mora sighed playfully “One more That’s what they always say” 

She laughed and began to reset the camera

LATER – VIDEO POSTED

Y/N saw it that night once she saw the video he stomach began to feel uneasy it could have been what she ate that morning but we know it wasn’t that

No warning and no text she just saw a video and thought long and hard how she gonna talk to Gilberto 

they never fought nor had a disagreement before so yn thought about what to say without the situation escalating but when your upset and angry you gotta do what you gotta do

Y/N: “ so I see you and the new girl there look really nice together there

Y/N: “ you know u seem really jolly with her reallyyyyy nice of you to be with girls rn while I’m here

Y/N: “Ngl if ur gonna do this fr and just ignoring me rn that’s fine but Im not gonna sit here like a fool while my bf is with other girl

-MORA POV –

Mora stared at his phone between training obligations *sitting on bench his thumbs hovering over screen and brow slightly furrowed thinking about what he could say*

he clearly felt yn anger thur those 3 text messages but clearly not nothing what to do in this situation 

He typed

Mora: nope that’s sounds corny

Deleted

Typed again

Mora: nah to desperate

Deleted again

He exhales *he began to run hand through hair muttering “no manches…” under his breath clearly stressed*

At 3 minutes of overthinking and figuring it out on what to say he thoguht to him self this is a good text to send…

Mora: “yn It’s just work I swear nothing else calm down

Then

Mora: “I didn’t think it was that deep…

But even he didn’t like how that sounded but he already hit send and no way of taking it back

-BACK TO PRESENT – TRAINING-

“Gilberto!” *coach voice is sharper atp*

No response

“Gilberto!” *slightly louder and frustrated*

Still nothing

The coach exhaled.

“Mora out go cool off”

Mora blinked *snaps back slightly nodding once*

“…yeah.”

-HALLWAY – WALKING TO ELEVATOR-

He wasn’t thinking clearly *his hands were in his pockets, shoulders a bit tense jaw clenched*

He was just tired and just stuck in his head 

Then—

Her

The PR girl

“Hey” she said “You looked off today you okay?” *soft tone head tilted slightly at him*

Mora nodded “Just… tired”

“Yeah, I get that media days are worse than games sometimes”

He gave a small smile

“I’ll give you that one *a small exhale through his nosegiving him some sort of ease*

Soon they began to walked together nothing weird between them just happened to be heading the same direction

-ELEVATOR ARRIVES-

PR GIRL: “What floor?”

MORA: “Seven”

PR GIRL: “Five for me”

Doors close

-ELEVATOR – FLOOR 2-

Clearly everything was fine all good

But time just had to be on the opposite side that mora was on today so once the elevator hit floor 2…

Ding

Doors open

Y/N is there *standing still for a half second eyes locking immediately on Mora*

-ELEVATOR POV –

Mora straightens instantly *shoulders up, immediate alertas well looked quickly at the PR girl then yn

MORA: “Y/N—”

But she’s already looking at him then at the PR girl then back at him

Yn: umm…I’ll just take the stairs instead *she barely moves her gaze already stepping back slightly making her way to the stairs*

PR GIRL: “Oh— hi you’re Y/N right? I’ve seen your work it’s really good—”

Y/N doesn’t answer not to her ESPECIALLY not her

Her eyes stay on Mora *her jaw was tight and she began to look aways and breath slowly while still looking at both of them *

Doors try to close again

Until mora put his hand between the doors to keep them open *metal pressing lightly against his palm and looking at the 30 second countdown screen of the elevator and then looking back at yn*

Mora: your coming in or not yn?

Y/N *quiet*: “It’s fine I will take the stairs instead

She wasn’t angry to the point u can see it in here face but mora could feel it

But not loud enough to make a scene but clearly mora could tell she was dead serious about it

She was just done and mora had to respect that so as the the countdown was down to 5 seconds left he put his hand back to his side and the Doors shut

-ELEVATOR – AFTER SHE LEAVES-

Silence was heavy and you probably cut the tension in half in that elevator 

Mora rubs his face *eyes shut for a second clearly trying to keep it together*

PR GIRL: “Uh… everything okay is she always like that

Mora doesn’t answer right away.

Then:

MORA: “Yeah just… long day and to answer your question no she not she just being stubborn that’s all

But his voice doesn’t match it

-FLOOR 5 – PR GIRL EXITS-

PR GIRL: well I’ll see you around mora *and as she walked out she did a small wave at him with a small smile showed on her*

MORA: “Yeah see ya *slight nod trying to act nonchalant*

Doors close again and now it’s just him and the awkward situation he put himself in

-MORA POV-

He exhales the moment she left 

“…that wasn’t good” * he said almost guilty*

mora: Ella me va a chingar…  he said as as kick the wall of the elevator

just the thoguht of you being mad at him made him feel like shit and made him feel sick to his stomach 

-FLOOR 7 – ARRIVAL-

Doors open

He steps out—

And freezes Y/N is still there waiting for him arm cross and everything plus clearly she did not take the stair

MORA: “yn you’re not even gonna talk to me?”

Y/N: “What’s there to talk about clearly you got other girls to talk to

MORA: “It wasn’t like that y tu sabes yn 

Y/N: “It always ‘isn’t like that’ until I see it por mis propios ojos 

Yn: you wouldn’t like that it was all up some dudes being buddy buddy huh would you Gilberto 

Mora pauses at what she said she used his first name not even a Bebe or mi amor nothing 

then he snapped out of it seeing yn was waiting for a answer 

MORA: “I didn’t know you were gonna see it like that”

Mora: think about it yn that’s not that point the point is that’s she just works here and nothing else yn

Y/N: “That’s the point Mora I always find out after and it don’t matter who it is fr it just it feels I’m losing you and your no longer there

MORA: “I didn’t text because I didn’t know how nor u need to feel that way I’m still gonna be here no matter what

Y/N: “That’s not an excuse and still clearly I ion see it one bit

MORA: “I know.” *He went looking down briefly*

Long pause

Y/N (quieter): “I saw it and I just… felt like I wasn’t even in your life anymore”

Mora’s expression drops immediately *his eyes dropped down to the floor hoping the floor would have a answer to help him *

MORA: “That’s not true”

Y/N: “ it feel like it tho

Mora steps closer and slowly not knowing what could happen next

MORA: “I’m not good at this I don’t know how to balance everything yet I’m sorry if I made you feel hurt in any way

Y/N: “I’m not asking you to be perfect Gilberto

MORA: “I just didn’t realize I was making you feel like that”

She looks away trying to keep it together

Y/N: “I don’t like feeling replaceable mora”

Instant reaction came from him and without thinking

MORA: “You’re not and took her hand and began to place small pecks on her knuckles

[ELEVATOR DING – FLOOR 7]

then DING

someone random gets off the elevator ruining there moment

leaving both of them awkwardly standing there while the worker looks at them and walk away

But neither moves

Y/N: that was awkward… she said as she lets goes of his grip and looks away

Mora hesitates and decides to take the opportunity he has right now and so

MORA: “Come with me”

Y/N: “Where?”

MORA: “Just… don’t go back to whatever you were gonna do”

She narrows her eyes slightly

Y/N: “That’s your solution?”

Mora shrugs lightly

MORA: “I’ll get you food after and I’ll buy u whatever you want…mi amor (soft blush began to show on his face*

*a small heat came from her face it’s been while since he called her that bringing her to a slight shock but still trying to be nonchalant*

Y/N: that’s the best u got mora

MORA: “It’s a good plan”

Silence

Then

a small sigh

Y/N: “…fine”

She steps in

Doors close

And off mora goes dragging her outside the training place *he light pulls her hand and she resists slightly protesting slightly but follows anyway*

Yn: they gonna get me in trouble if I’m not there in 5 minutes mora *meanwhile mora is trying to pull her hand back but not really trying that hard*

Mora looked over at her with a small grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, still walking like he already knew she wasn’t actually leaving

Mora: trouble? que exagerada you’ll survive five minutes

Yn: Gilberto I’m being serious

Mora: and I’m being serious too

He glanced down at her for a second before looking ahead again

Mora: you really thought I wanted her?

Yn rolled her eyes immediately

Yn: don’t start I don’t wanna argue anymore

Mora: no seriously

He slowed down a little finally turning toward her

Mora: mírame

Her eyes slowly lifted to him

Mora: out of all the people around me… cameras, games, interviews, all that stuff…

He shrugged lightly

Mora: I still look for you first

For a second she just stared at his and she hated it because she knew she was week in the kneels for him

Because she could literally feel herself folding.

Yn: okay don’t get all smooth now

Mora: * now smiling a little bigger now*smooth? I wasn’t trying to be smooth

Yn: yes you were

Mora: no I wasn’t mamá te lo juro

Yn narrowed her eyes.

Yn: did you just “mamá te lo juro” me?

Mora started laughing

Mora: maybe

Yn: ni inventes you feel hella bold today or what

She tried walking ahead of him but he caught up immediately

Mora: oye you’re still mad?

Yn stayed quiet for a second

Yn: maybe like… 15%

Mora gasped dramatically putting his hand over his chest like his heart shattered

Mora: fifteen?!

Yn: okay maybe ten

Mora: ahh mira we’re making progress

Yn looked away trying to hide the smile creeping onto her face

Yn: don’t get too happy

Mora looked at her for a second like really looked at her

Mora: I don’t like when you’re mad at me

His voice got quieter a lot less teasing and more honest mora

Mora: se siente raro…

The little smile on her face faded.

Yn: you scared me you know that?

He looked down, rubbing the back of his neck

Mora: lo siento… de verdad

Silence.

Then she bumped her shoulder into his lightly.

Yn: ándale buy me food and maybe I’ll forgive you fully

Mora looked up instantly

Mora: see? I knew food would save my relationship

Yn:  cállate la boca

Mora: tacos?

Yn: …and a drink too

Mora: wow okay so now you’re taking advantage of me

Yn: pues sí and you’re paying too

Mora: ahh pues no sabía he said in a sarcastic tone

Yn: no te quejes

Mora looked at her for a second before smiling.

Mora: there she is

Yn: huh?

Mora: mi niña enojona came back

Yn immediately shoved his shoulder

Yn: boy shut up before I change my mind and tell don memo on you

Mora just laughed and wrapped an arm around her shoulders as they kept walking

Mora: too late, ya gané
