Our youngest son turned 8 and for 5 years now we've celebrated every #family member's birthday without #booze That means it's always been a #sobercelebration since his 3rd birthday. While this may be normal in some families, it's such a big accomplishment in ours, considering what we've been through. We were raised in a culture where drinking is part of socialization and where people can hardly tell the difference between social drinking and substance abuse. People drink and do stupid stuff, and it's normal. Couples drink and fight, and it's normal. Kids drink with the adults and leave school, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. When my husband and I both decided it was no longer okay despite it being the "norm" and when we wanted to do something about it, we sought our friends' and family's support and cried for help. Luckily for us, our parents were more than willing to let go of a practice they've grown very used to since they themselves were kids. With a lot of prayers and by God's grace, we succeeded in removing alcohol and cigarettes from our menu and have been #sober for five years now. These kids will grow up seeing that life IS FUN and we don't need alcohol as social lubricant. On his 8th birthday, his aunt @dr_cuddle5 and friends helped him put together some building blocks, while the older kids played PS4. They'll learn to start real conversations and make genuine human connection in #sobercelebrations #Recovery IS indeed possible.
