Been rewatching the Snow Halation episodes for Christmas and god they're still so good, I absolutely love them and this show so much. One of my favorite and I think one of the most underrated bits in them is Umi's little speech in Melody of the Heart when they're trying to make it to the concert in the snow. She's a character defined by a complete fear of actually wanting or feeling anything, seeing it as immature and "shameless". In My Wish she literally hides in the corner panicking at the idea of being in a relationship. She fights with Honoka at the end of season 1 and finally slaps her and calls her "the worst person ever" after she calls her idol dream stupid, the dream she'd managed to not only convince Umi to follow, but to want herself. In this episode she finally loudly declares how she's not just competing for everyone else, she wants to win too. She's someone so ashamed of her own emotions, as I mentioned someone afraid of actually wanting, or of letting herself want anything. It's such a perfect culmination of her character through the show. It's like less than a minute, and a small scene in the episode as a whole (one filled with great character moments) but it's so perfect and has always stuck with me. (Kira Buckland's amazing acting in the dub definitely helps, SIP's dub is super underrated.)
I think it being one of my favorite moments is definitely a bit of personal bias, I relate a lot to characters like Umi, and Nozomi in My Wish, and Maki before, etc.
That fear of your own wants being out of line with what's "expected" of you. The pressure to live up to expectations and the mask it puts on your true feelings and the feeling that dreams just, weren't really something you were meant to experience.
This little moment in a two parter entirely based around the characters learning to demolish those fears just, lands so hard and adds so much to an already amazing package Rambling and not structuring well but, god these episodes and this show are so good I love it so much
