There's probably a long essay to be written on how chatbots and other "AI" plays are doomed to be unprofitable (barring rent-seeking) simply because they represent a near 100% organic composition of capital. Data centers the size of Manhattan to power chatbots that produce misinformation, illegal and immoral deepfake porn, garbled summaries of search engine results, "autonomous" vehicles that require >1 telop interventions per ride, etc., etc., none of which have been shown to be able to generate revenues above costs, and which depend on the largess of what is now coming to be known as the Epstein Class, a class which, hey, wait a second, what is Marvin Minsky doing in there?! Why did all of these AI researchers go to Little St. James?!
Of course profitability is only one concern. A number of these companies are run by techno-extropians who believe that if we throw enough data at enough model parameters ("scaling") we'll invent Robo-Jesus who ushers in an age of transhumanist immortality and virtual abundance (it'll let us upload our brains into the metaverse; this is what digital technology C-suites actually believe). Sure, we've thrown a trillion dollars in capital at these things with no discernible increase in productivity (at the very least not at the "10x" scale promised), and with a proliferation of novel mental illnesses, but if we just double the data we throw at it, surely, we'll immanentize the eschaton this time.
