We'll close this week on #smokingcessation with the original Marlboro Man, an actual cowboy named Bob Norris, who didn't smoke. He died in November 2019:

Lobelia inflata gets its species name from the shape of its seedpods (which it shares with all the other lobelias). As you can see in the top center of this image, they look like little balloons. . . . I mostly use lobelia to help people quit smoking. It seems to do something for the nicotine craving, which has been attributes to the alkaloid lobeline filling up the empty spits in the nervous system that nicotine leaves behind when you stop smoking. It's also calming, so it tends to take the edge off of the nervous or grouchy feelings people get when they quit. . . It has also been used, in varying doses and situations, for weight loss, for breathing difficulty, and to induce vomiting. . . #herbalmedicine #smokingcessation #herbs #wildflower #lobelia
Smoking Doesn't Just Shorten Your Life. It Steals the Quality of the Years You Have Left.
Why quitting today may be the most profitable decision you ever make. Every smoker knows smoking is harmful. Every cigarette packet says it.Doctors say it.Family members say it.Governments spend millions on campaigns saying it. Yet millions continue to smoke. Why? Because smoking is rarely about nicotine alone. It becomes a habit.A routine.A stress reliever.A companion during loneliness.A…

Quit Smoking Journey: Small Daily Steps Toward a Healthier Life
If you've ever tried to quit smoking, you probably know it's about much more than putting down a cigarette.
For many people, smoking becomes part of a routine. Morning coffee. Work breaks. Long drives. Stressful days. Celebrations. Quiet moments. It can feel like it's woven into everyday life.
That's why quitting isn't simply about saying "no." It's about learning new habits that fit the life you want to build.
The First Few Days Can Feel Strange
One of the biggest surprises is how often your brain expects a cigarette without you even realizing it.
You finish a meal.
Your mind says, "Time for a smoke."
You feel stressed.
Your mind says, "A cigarette will help."
Those thoughts don't mean you've failed. They're simply reminders that your brain is adjusting to a different routine.
I Started Replacing the Habit Instead of Fighting It
Instead of focusing on what I couldn't have, I started asking myself:
"What can I do instead?"
Sometimes it was as simple as:
Walking around the block.
Filling up a water bottle.
Calling a friend.
Listening to music.
Taking five slow breaths.
Reading a chapter of a book.
None of these erased every craving, but they helped me get through the next few minutes. And often, that was enough.
Progress Isn't Always Perfect
One thing people don't talk about enough is that setbacks can happen.
A difficult day at work.
An unexpected stressful event.
A social gathering.
If you slip, it doesn't erase the progress you've already made. Many people need more than one attempt before quitting for good. What's important is learning what triggered the moment and trying again.
Every new attempt teaches you something.
Celebrate the Small Wins
Not every victory has to be huge.
Maybe today you:
Smoked fewer cigarettes than yesterday.
Made it through your lunch break without smoking.
Reached for water instead.
Went for a walk when a craving hit.
Woke up determined to keep trying.
Those moments count.
They add up over time.
Your Body Is Working With You
Once you stop smoking, your body begins adjusting. While everyone's experience is different, many people notice positive changes over time, such as easier breathing during daily activities, improved sense of taste and smell, or feeling more energetic.
These changes don't happen overnight, but every smoke-free day gives your body another opportunity to recover.
Don't Try to Do It Alone
Support can make a real difference.
Whether it's a friend, family member, healthcare professional, or a smoking cessation support program, having someone encourage you can help during the tougher days.
There's no prize for struggling in silence.
A Reminder for Anyone Reading This
If you're thinking about quitting, you don't have to be perfect.
You don't have to have all the answers.
You don't even have to believe you'll succeed right away.
You just have to be willing to take the first step.
Then the next one.
And the one after that.
One smoke-free day may not seem like much in the moment—but over weeks and months, those days become something powerful.
If today is your Day One, I'm rooting for you.
And if today isn't Day One, that's okay too.
Whenever you're ready, your next step is waiting.
