Smokescreens - On and On

Plenty of bands over the years have used the Clean as a template. But how many of them have gotten an actual member of the Clean to produce their record? That’s right, Los Angeles’ Smokescreens drafted none other than David Kilgour to man the boards for A Strange Dream, their new-ish long-player. It’s a winning team-up, and sounds generally as you’d expect — that classic strum-chime-jangle guitar, perfectly catchy chord progressions and winsome vocals. It’s a Flying Nun-style feast (though the album actually kicks off with a riff nicked from the Go-Betweens. Close enough?). Totally nice, totally breezy.

"When the world brings you down / I'll be the one who's coming around" canta la ballata I Love Only You, proprio in chiusura di A Strange Dream, il terzo album dei californiani Smokescreens. Potresti scambiarli per due versi qualunque, risapute rime sentimentali buone per tutte le occasioni. “When you need to be found / I'll be the one who's coming around”, mentre il coro continua a rassicurare “I love only you, it’s true”. È una canzone molto Velvet Underground, con una sua schiva solennità: tre minuti risoluti, sfiora appena il climax e poi svanisce...   

Slumberland will be releasing this album at the end of October 2020.  Smokescreens is based in Los Angeles, but Cunningham was originally from the Bay Area.
