“Reserves Judgment On Smiths Falls Charge,” Ottawa Journal. October 23, 1937. Page 24. ---- PERTH. Ont, Oct 23 (Special) - Mrs. Lillian Veley, Smiths Falls, charged with supplying instruments for an illegal operation. appeared before judge Frank W. Wilson here today for trial and judgement was reserved until a future date. The prosecution was conducted by County Crown Attorney W. W. Pollock, of Carleton Place, who called four witnesses and based his argument on exhibit found in the possession of the accused which he said showed intent to commit an offence.
H. A. O Donnell, K.C. of Perth, represented the accused and offered no defence by way of witnesses.
The charge was laid by Provincial Constable Lawrence Carr, of Perth.
“Smiths Falls Woman Sentenced,” Ottawa Journal. October 26, 1937. Page 12. ---- Mrs. Lillian Veeley Given Two Tears In Penitentiary. --- PERTH, Ont., Oct, 26 (Special) - Mrs. Lillian Veeley, of Smith Falls, was sentenced to two years in Portsmouth penitentiary when she appeared before Judge Frank W. Wilson for sentence this morning.
Mrs. Veeley was found guilty of supplying instruments to perform an illegal operation on Sept 14. She was taken into custody at Perth by Provincial Constables L. C .Carr and J. E. Soubliere and Chief of Police Charles Donovan.
In passing sentence. Judge Wilson accused the prisoner of reckless disregard for human nature and found it necessary to make an example in her case. His Honor commended the work of Constable Carr for his work on the case and also Crown Attorney W. W. Pollock, of Carleton Place, in bringing the case before the courts.
