Soooo Guzma and Satoshi had a staring contest and the moment Guzma sees Kukui in Satoshi, he kinda flinches or something? And Satoshi takes an ever deeper stare. I don’t know, this scene just has so much.... going on?
I can’t help but love this scene, it shows that Satoshi doesn’t take their battle for granted and is prepared for whatever’s to come. Hell. Even later, during their battle, when Satoshi does take out his Hassam/Scizor, he’s not celeberating! He usually is! But this time, he’s not, nor is Nyaheat.
Like, look!
This is Guzma’s face.
This is Nyaheat’s face.
And this is Satoshi’s.
Gusokumusha/Golisopod did such a bad move on getting its ability activated and making Hassam, bug-type, take a hit from one of the most powerful fire-type moves. It’s no wonder there’s no celebration on anyone’s face. With Guzma’s meltdown beginning, Satoshi is still remaining calm and determined, not faltering his focus.
Plumeria on the other hand is forced to look at Guzma lose his cool, just as she feared would happen! She tried to warn Guzma to not lose focus, to not take him for granted. Had Guzma actually realised what Gusokumusha’s ability does, when it triggers, being able to read it properly, he might have been able to avoid this. But he didn’t. And now, he’s at his meltdown point.
What this event triggered in him thou, is what I’d say is that he’s even more dangerous of an opponent now. He just told Gusokumusha that they won’t be losing now.
I’m quite excited for next week, as this battle seems to be turning into one heck of a battle to witness. Guzma’s down to at-least half-damaged Gusokumusha, while Satoshi has type-disadvantaged Nyaheat with his health already lowered, and full-in-health Pikachu, based on previews. Guess we’ll see Pikachu get his revenge on Gusokumusha after all!
Just some thoughts, I really love what they’re doing with Guzma, and I can’t tell you enough how glad I am that Pokeani actually explores his relationship with Kukui more. Ty Pokeani. Now let’s see how he’ll grow from this experience.
Alola League arc discussion: do you think the anime will address Guzma’s relationship with his father?
Warning! Possible spoilers ahead. Continue reading otherwise.
As we approach the last few episodes of the Alola League arc, a few things have crossed my mind while watching the past couple of episodes of the Pokémon Sun and Moon series. In this week’s episode, we see the beginnings of one of the league’s most anticipated matches (Satoshi VS. Guzma). There is no doubt in my mind that Satoshi will defeat Guzma (unless there is a major plot twist) and we will see a complete emotional meltdown from Guzma.
Since Guzma’s anime debut, this chapter of the series has provided us with some decent background to his character (a rocky dynamic with Kukui and a scene of a younger Guzma rejecting Hala’s teachings) and most recently, a scene (referencing the ending to Guzma’s character debut in SM 115) to which Plumeria has to clean up the destroyed second and third place trophies and medals that Guzma had won. An episode back, (SM 135) Plumeria lets us in on a piece of information that the grunts do not know why Guzma has never lost a battle before. I believe in the next part of the semifinals, all of this will unfold.
This leads me to wonder if the anime will ever touch on the not so subtle in game implication that Guzma was abused by his father. Given how the Alola League arc is wrapping up (and that Pokémon is a show geared towards kids), I would be very shocked if this was depicted in the anime, however, a part of me would not be surprised if this was depicted (or hinted at at least) in the anime. Thus far, this the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime in general has done an excellent job in addressing some touchier subjects in life (death of a loved one) and it would not come as a shock for the anime to show us that Guzma had a rough upbringing.
What do you all think?

Satoshi VS Guzma is thankfully legit so far and looking at the preview the most intense parts are only yet to come even though we’ve already entered upset Guzma territory, just what I wanted to see. Last week’s episode ended in a way where it felt like there was still an intense finale in store for Glazio VS Kaki but it ended up feeling pretty anticlimactic, kinda wish they had just finished things off last week. Or at least used that painfully drawn out Kiteruguma scene for a few extra exchanges between Bakugames and Silvady, even if they didn’t have time to animate them that well. Also disappointed that we didn’t get a post battle feelings scene with Kaki, even though I loved the whole “I only used to consider Satoshi my rival but you’re one too now, Glazio” thing, I never thought the title of the episode would be from Kaki’s perspective. His positivity over losing seemed almost recent gen Satoshi esque lol, now Satoshi can’t be upset over losing either if he does or he’ll look like a baby compared to Kaki. Anyway go go NyaHEAT I know you’ll lose next episode but get some cool new Iwane animated moves in please~
New Episode Title and an Update Episode Title
SM134: Everyone’s Super Full-Force! The Road to the Semifinals!!
SM136: Blazing Fire! There’s More That One Rival!!
SM136 will air on August 25.
Kiawe and Sophocles’s battle will conclude and Lana and Guzma’s battle will start (and maybe finish) in SM134. Team Skull will attack Mimo, only for Gladion to save her in SM135. That could lead to a conflicted Kiawe when he battles Gladion in that episode. Kiawe and Gladion’s battle will be concluded and Ash will battle Guzma in SM136.
