I remember when we were paying our internet connection bill my mother complained about having a slow internet connection. According to them they still don’t have a cell site on our area. Nowadays people tends to post everything on the spot. Like for example they take a picture then post it on their different social media sites. But then in the Philippines we experience slow internet connection.

Over the last several months I have been restricted in my use of my home internet because, I find, the limit to the internet I use is no longer sufficient to my needs.

I have, every month, 200GB of Data allowance granted to me by Telstra Australia via the contract my family has with them. I now find this to be too little for my needs. As the sole primary user of the internet in my home it should, most would think, be enough to satisfy me but it does not.

I looked, about 4 weeks ago, at changing our data plan from the 200GB plan to the next up which is 500GB. A rather large step but given I can chew 200GB up and spit it out without trying in only 2 weeks it seemed a prudent measure.

However I encountered a problem.

If I was to change JUST our Data plan then my family would loose many of the benefits the rest of their plans afford them, from international calling to Foxtel premium services. No single worker amongst the many Telstra representatives we spoke with in the days following could give us a straight up answer that changing our Data plan would not impact these services also.

And so due to these factors and the potential $100 a month leap in our bill the change was rescinded and I am stuck with 200GB.

Now this month I have behaved, I am less than 24 hours away from the reset of our Data cap and I have only just in the last 12 hours gone over my limit. But this is where my real issue with the service lies.

In a correspondence with several PR people via the telstra twitter account I was informed that after the breach of my 200GB cap then my net would be throttled excepting for "essential services only".

I am still yet to figure out what these "Essential Services" are since they do not seem to include the Telstra.com.au page nor is it facebook, twitter, hotmail, gmail, google or any of the many other day to day high use sites.

My standard speed has gone from a fair 17mbs, down to an abysmal 0.13mbs if I am lucky and the router is feeling generous. I do not feel that this glacial speed of internet is fair or just in today's current form of 5-10mb pages, large format images and youtube news videos. The online environment of today has changed greatly in the last 10years since the implementation of Broadband services and their subsequent data limits.

Despite the growth of the market and the Caps to reflect the growth the punishment remains the same. 10 years ago this punishment was, at best, a minor inconvenience. Youtube barley existed and videos came in an easily compressed and low quality flv format. In today's society though of high bandwidth web pages and equally high bandwidth games to match, the restrictions of the past are now a literal death sentence to the common consumer of the internet.

It is this issue that telstra and any other ISP's (Internet Service Providers) need to address and be made truly aware of.
