《Field Trip 1》Textil Museum in Borås
Göteborgから電車で一時間ほど東へ進むと、繊維の街Borås にやってきました！留学前にスウェーデンに関する図書の中で知った街で、ずっと気になっていた場所です。友人の実家へ行ったついでに、「Textilmuseet」を訪問しました。
海外からの輸入増加による国内繊維産業の衰退は、日本だけが抱えている問題ではありません。スウェーデンでも同様な流れがありました。
「Textile Power」と題された常設展では、時代の流れとともにどのようにテキスタイル産業が変化していったのか、当時実際に使われていた機械をはじめ（日本製のもの発見！）、途上国における労働・生活環境を映し出しており（実際にスラムのような空間が広がる）、興味深い内容でした。
産業革命後、繊維産業は産業化がもっとも早く進んだ産業。BoråsがあるSjuhäradでは、競争力、資本、労働力が揃い、繊維産業が発展するコンディションが整っていたため、スウェーデンの繊維産業が発展していった地域です。
しかし、1980年代以降Boråsの街にあった繊維工場は撤退し、今ではハンドクラフトのお店も無くなってしまったと館内スタッフのおばあさんが話してくれました。どの会社もエストニアをはじめ、国外にある安い賃金でまかなえる工場へと移行していったと言います。
館内にあるブティック「Mariedal Design」で働くエレノイさんにもお話を伺うことができました。スウェーデンのテキスタイルの98%は輸入であるということ、母親もAlgotsという場所にあった縫製工場でストッキングを作っていたが90年代にはなくなってしまったこと。彼女が前に働いていたような小さなプライベート会社では、家具の生地なら製作しているところもあると教えてくれました。
Mariedal Designでは、Alingsåsという地域にて独自の生産チェーンがあり、すべての商品がスタジオで縫製されているそうです。実際にお店の中には、ミシンがおかれており、生地を選んで服をオーダーすることができます。
産業革命前の、家にあるミシンを使って自分自身で服を作っていた時代もあったと思うと時代の変化は目まぐるしいと感じます。便利になったいまの時代では、ある意味で服とのつながりが薄れ、消費に対する考え方が全く異なりました。服を選ぶときに消費者に問われているのは「想像力」なのかもしれません。素材に触れること・環境や作り手に想いを馳せること。クローゼットを開け、毎日着る服一つひとつに潜む「物語」に耳を傾けてみることから始めてみようと思います。
また特別展には、スウェーデンのウールアーティストによる展示「Ull för livet」がやっていました。サステナブルで実用的、多様性に富んだ素材であるウール。スウェーデン国内には578,000頭の羊がおり、各地にウール農家が存在するそうです。分解できリサイクルができること、丈夫であること、洗濯が必要ないことなどウールが持つ可能性と魅力を知った展示でした。そして手を使って羊毛をかり糸を紡ぐことは、自然の中で生まれる行為なんだと改めて気づかせてくれます。昔から寒い地域に暮らしていた人々は、いきものの温もりを感じて寒さをしのぎ、生きていたのだと想像しながら作品を楽しみました。
