February 1940 - Australia
The Rare Books and Special Collections isn’t all books. We are using the Lunar New Year to take a closer look at some Chinese treasures and a retro gadget. The four volume work, Chinese Art in three-dimensional colour, comes with a View-Master and reels with 1200 images. The art works captured on the reels are from both public and private collections and have examples of art works from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century. The photographs were taken by William Gruber, with Rupert Leach taking over after Gruber’s death in 1965.
The View Master is probably best known to most people as a children’s toy, but was originally intended as an educational tool. In addition to reels with images of popular film characters for children, reels were released with scenes of tourist attractions, an atlas of human anatomy and even training materials for US military personnel in WWII.

Private Diary and Journal of a Light Horseman Sgt William Peterson 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment EL-ARISH, SINAI PENINSULAR 9th JANUARY 1917 No Taubes paid us visits during the moonlight so we [who are left] had a peaceful night of it. The whole Anzac Mounted Division has gone to take Rafa, no news has come back yet our machines have been flying backwards and forwards all the morning. Been feeling sick again today, don’t know what is wrong, went to our 1st L.H. Field Ambulance but all doctors have gone out. At 11.30 a Taube came over from the South side of El Arish and the first intimation we had of it was the loud crash of 5 bombs one after the other presently the machine came into our field of vision. The anti-aircraft guns banged shell after shell into the air but none hit the Taube although some of them were close. He even had the audacity to come back and fly amongst the bursting shells He sailed away however and went north along the coast. 3. pm. No details as to how the scrap has gone yet. Thought I heard guns or bombs once or twice but the distance is great for such sounds – 30 miles Still getting sick.

Partly it has great practical value -- you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redily on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindbogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you -- daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Description de l’Egypte
Carte topographique de l’Egypte is the biggest item in the State Library of New South Wales Rare Books collection. The three volumes measure 112 cm x 70 cm and weigh over 22 kilos each. The volumes are a part of the immense 23 volume set of Description de l’Egypte that covers the geology, geography, flora, fauna, antiquity and contemporary society of Egypt in the late 18th century to the early 19th century. They were published at the insistence of Napoleon from 1809 to 1828.
Description de l’Egypte is the collaborative work of about 160 civilian scholars and scientists who accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798 to 1801 as part of the French Revolutionary Wars.

Private Diary and Journal of a Light Horseman Sgt William Peterson 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment EL-ARISH, SINAI PENINSULAR 5th JANUARY 1917 As if ashamed of his conduct yesterday old Sol (the sun) shone gloriously as if to make up for lost time today. It rained very heavily during the night, and there are some very sorry-looking clouds hanging around the horizon. Exercised the horses along the sea front and let them wash their legs in the briny which does them good. I have been feeling slightly feverish the last couple of days I think I must have contracted a chill when we went on that last reconnaissance out to Sheikh Zowond 18 miles away. I laid down on the soaking wet ground and a cold wind blowing and my blanket was wet and I have been having a lot of rain soak through the roof of my dugout so it all helps. Butler, our tired man, has gone to Kantara to interview the O/C Flying Corps with a view to transferring, he will be gone several days. Just heard on the news that Sir Phillip Chetwood got "Strafed" for not notifying General Head Quarters that he was going to smash things up at Maghdaba. General Sir Archibald Murray the Commander-in-Chief has given him a "wigging". Anyhow we did good work and Sir Phillip Chetwood is as I thought a real live Cavalry leader one with some push and go. Young and vigorous, not a fossilized old fogey of the antequated old School. He will do us for a Commander if the report is true we should be sorry to hear it. Paid Jimmy Probert for the Kodak £2.
