Another collaboration with Tingully. Cherry slab with butterfly dovetails by Annie Raso. Tingully and I are really happy with this base design. It is one we intend to use on many future projects. Photo cred to Simon Reinert of Duck Duck Collective. Nice to be working with so many talented people.
See and read the Creation Story.
Dropped this table + bench combo off Thursday night. Final photos to follow. Really pleased with this entire result and a pleasure working with Tingully on the metal design and Annie Raso on the butterfly dovetails.
Magic.
A drop of sweat on the table top is just one of many. Annie's wonderful butterfly dovetails are in. And Dustin's custom iron legs are done. Sanded to 120 right now. So a few more hours to get it to 220 or maybe even 320. Then flip it over and make the underside presentable. Then some tongue oil to finish.

Sarah and I bought some reclaimed water tower cedar a while back. I milled it all down and glued it all together. But to my horror, after 2 weeks it had warped badly. This is a fairly common issue with reclaimed wood and one that I will attempt not to repeat. There was no logical way to salvage the top, so I have since cut it all back into planks and will use it for something else.
Moving on, I decided after speaking with Sarah that a slab table would better suit her tastes. It will also fit the leg design that Made-In-Chinatown already completed. This cherry slab is going to make a stunning piece. Once again, I have the help of Annie Raso, who is quickly becoming an integral part of Left to Right Furniture. What do you think of her butterfly dovetails (the hour glass shaped pieces)?
Sarah was in a seemingly common dilemma among successful, late 20s professionals. She finally moved into a nice apartment and wanted to purchase furniture that she actually liked -- instead of Ikea crap. So she came to Left to Right for help. My colleague Dustin John and I met her at Bierkraft to talk design, draw up some sketches, and enjoy a damn fine IPA. I've deemed her aesthetic "minimalistic with skinny legs" which I surmised from both our discussions and her pinterest board. Very cool.
Once the design was hammered out, Sarah joined me for an afternoon trip to the lumberyard - Build it Green - and a brief session in the shop to see how the reclaimed water tower cedar we picked up was transformed into a table top. The glue-up is complete at this point. Some sanding and staining is in order. Dustin is working away on the iron legs he designed. Looking forward to the finished product as it will add a new aesthetic to the Left to Right line up. And when we decide on bench design, those too will be unique!
Reclaimed > New. These reclaimed water tower cedar planks are a perfect example of why I like the beat up, old look over the new. It's just more interesting to me. On the weathered side, I ran the boards through the joiner a few times, but not enough to get down to the raw wood. On the "boring" side, I took off about an inch of wood overall. I just prefer the additional character. Makes it more interesting to me.
