It was a wet morning, with rain before noon, then cloudy for the rest of the day. The overnight low was 44 degrees, and the high managed to rise to 56.
My blood sugar dropped today, down to 192. This was most likely due last night’s dinner of protein and the extra Metformin.
Just before we got started with coffee and brain games, Nancy took a call from the Edward Jones rep to discuss getting more money to cover the cost of renovations for the 8th Street house, including paying for labor.
Once we finished our coffee and played the usual online brain games we made a breakfast of cheesy eggs, bacon and toast with jam. Then we showered and dressed, put a load of laundry in the wash, and got ready to run out.
We stopped by Shutterbug to pick up the slide scanner I ordered the other day. Then we went across the street to Trader Joe’s and got corn chips, salsa, potatoes, broccoli florets, and sandwich cheese.
We went by the Native Coffee on Centennial for a hot mocha, then stopped by the 8th Street house briefly. Several of the windows have been put in place, and more of the exterior shingles had been removed.
Then we came home, and I spent a little time playing with the new slide scanner. I was not impressed with the first couple of tests, but I will try doing more research to find out how to improve results.
Then I scanned a slide with the flatbed scanner a few times, using different features, to see if I could match the results from the photo lab. Nothing quite worked as well.
If I cannot figure out how to get the new slide scanner to work well enough, I will return it. There is a 10 percent charge, if I recall correctly, but that’s not as bad as having spent $150 on a device that does not work very well.
Having messed with that for a while, I decided to pass on doing anything with the new iMac today.
After we munched some of the new chips and salsa, with string cheese, I walked around the larger neighborhood alone for 2.1 miles in just under 40 minutes, a total of 4,700 steps. The afternoon sun got in my eyes along the way, and it was comfortable enough that I could have done without the puffy vest.
Nancy was playing the piano when I got home. Then she put together a fire for later in the evening. I got back on the computer and played a little more with the new slide scanner, trying a few more options for improving the results.
Then we napped. When we got up, it was already after 4 p.m. I went back on the computer to dig up more photos from the archives to post. Nancy spent time on social media.
Around 6 p.m. Nancy put dinner together, warming up a couple of pieces of leftover meatloaf. She also put potatoes on to boil for mashing, and I prepped the broccoli for steaming. Once it was all put together, we sat down and enjoyed the meal. We followed it with a dark chocolate peanut butter cup for dessert.
Then we tuned into streaming for the evening, beginning with the first episode in the new series of “Shakespeare & Hathaway,” the BritBox series about a pair of private investigators. The last series was three years ago, and we’ve been waiting to see this one again.
Next up was the latest episode of “Murder in a Small Town,” which offered a couple of threads beyond the bounds of the main plot, some of which are likely to turn up again in future shows.
We finished with the sixth episode of “Down Cemetery Road,” from Mick Herron’s precursor to “Slow Horses.” The bad guy killed a couple of innocent people, and all the main characters appear headed for a showdown, obviously during the next two episodes.
While Nancy made some relaxation tea and took some wild cherry bark for her coughing, I got back to my blogging, wrapping up the day’s list of adventures.
More rain is forecast for early tomorrow morning, then again for a brief period after noon. Tonight’s low could reach 42 degrees, and tomorrow’s high might beat today’s, going to 57.
If Nancy’s cough is still bugging her too much in the morning, she will likely opt out of attending the recovery “gratitude” event for Thanksgiving. I am likely to go for just a couple of hours before coming home. Since the family celebration is delayed until Saturday, we might wind up having more meatloaf, mashed potatoes and broccoli for our holiday meal.
On this date in 1942, “Casablanca,” the movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, premiered in New York City. It went on to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Its reputation has gradually grown, to the point that it consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films in history.
