When Walter P. Chrysler was having a skyscraper raised to serve as the headquarters for his Chrysler motor company in 1929, he was competing with those constructing 40 Wall Street to claim the title of tallest building in the world. Architect William Van Alen, who designed the iconic Art Deco style skyscraper, had a 185-foot spire custom built to make the building reach 1,046 feet into the Manhattan sky and take the title. Completed the following year, the Chrysler Building stands 77 stories above Lexington Avenue (where I snapped this photos) and 42nd Street. * * * * * * * * * * “Stand across the street from the Chrysler Building — any corner, just look up — and stare at that magnificent spire, that art deco top hat that graces one of the craziest, kitschiest, and most beloved buildings in New York City.” ~ Greg Young & Tom Meyers, The Bowery Boys Adventures Old New York ************************************ (Photo: © 2018 Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com) ************************************ #chryslerbuilding #chryslerbuildingnyc #lookingupatbuildings #lookingupclub #lookingup #iconic #iconic #archi_features #archi_unlimited #architecture_greatshots #buildingswow #nycskyscrapers #skyscraper_architecture #skyscraper #skyscrapercity #artdeco #artdecobuilding #chrysler #gothamcity #midtown #manhattan #what_i_saw_in_nyc #icapture_nyc #ignycity #NikonLoveNY #nypostnyc #topnewyorkphoto #picturesofnewyork #nyloveyou #newyorkstateofmind ************************************ @chrysler_building @chryslernyc @archdigest @nyc_skyscrapers @skyscraping_architecture @travelandleisure @nytimes @amnewyork (at Chrysler Building)
