whenever i think about your sonic, mighty, and ray reunion fic, its just this
no clue if itâs accurate or not but yeah đ
anyway, very much looking forward to it
!!!!!!!!!!! This freaking made my day when I saw it in my ask box. I'm chewing on your art like warm sourdough bread. It's 100% accurate, and I'm going to include a reference to the Steven Universe opening just for this xDDD
Tails is so precious, just look at that smile, his little sparkles~
The happiest he's ever been! â
In the fic, he's not entirely all sunshine and rainbows, he's more curious and listening to conversations intently for any clues or hints to Sonic's history with these two; he really wants to know about this chapter of his big brother and best friend's life that happened long before him. He's not necessarily jealous... but he doesn't like that there are obviously things Sonic and Mighty aren't saying while in front of him and Ray.
The way you drew all three of the Christmas islanders is just so spot on though, like who told you??? How did you see the vision before I even wrote it down? xD
Ahhh, thank you so much for this <3 And I'm looking forward to getting this fic out there, too!

was pondering bad future sonic for the thousandth time. he still drives me insane and wonât leave me alone
sorry if his design isnât quite right đ
plus a little abstradgey doodle
OMGGGGG, I'm screaming and crying while also giggling and kicking my feet simultaneously, lol. Ahhhhh, your art is so good!!! Bad Future Sonic's design is immaculate ⨠Especially that t-shirt, it's incredible xD
But seriously, I'm enamored with all of this đ The soft, sad, tenderness of Sonic watching Tails sleep after living with him being dead for ten years (plus Tails looks so freaking cute?? His cheek floof puffing up under his arm is adorable). Then there's the gut wrenching emptiness of Sonic watching the Tornado crash in the ocean, helpless to stop it but still reaching... it's beautiful. And then I keep laughing at poor Sonic's extremely unamused expression and the exhaustion lining his eyes in that t-shirt xD Sorry, buddy! You are the punchline of someone's joke, that's for sure. Plus, you're either going to have to lose your brother a second time or cease to exist entirely! Still haven't decided. So life definitely isn't done messing with him yet (I'm really so sorry Sonic, you look so tired ;_;).
Then of course, last but not least, that's the cutest freaking abstragedy doodle I've ever seen in my life. I love them. I'm crying and holding them in my hands, they're so smol and so soft. Protect them at all cost from the Bad Future AU. I will not give them one xD They can just watch this one with some popcorn :3
But thank you so much for these! I love them all and I'm always fascinated by your art and the way you capture emotions with it đđđ
Hiya skimming, here was the little doodle I came up with a while ago for the Not by a Long Shot fanfic (+ bonus & Knuckles). Nothing too special but figured I wanted to share quickly anyways
Oh my gosh!!! They're so cute, I love them! Their Riders fits are everything! And Knuckles <333 The keeper of their gear xD Putting his guardian energy to good use, poor guy. That doodle/sketch hog style for him is adorable though, I love it! Reminds me of the little emotes from CrossWorlds!
Thank you for the lovely fanart! I'm so happy this fic inspired you to draw something for it <3 And gosh, the brothers really do look so good. Little matching goggles and sneaks~ Both so happy and clearly allowed to peacefully race without any rude people bothering them :')
âTails's shoulders were already sagging, the fight draining out of him because he knew. The first home he could remember building was the one in Sonic's corner, crafted from the sturdiest materials known to Mobius; that could withstand anything. Not titanium or tungsten. No covalent bond in the universe could compare to the one they shared.â
Ok, for the WIP tag game, there are two I'm curious about, so answer for whichever one you feel like (or both if no one else asks about them).
Specifically, "Side B" has me wondering, but I also can't see "Christmas Shoes" and not immediately think of the sappy Christmas song.
Thank you for the ask! Someone else also asked about Side B, so I'll drop a little lore about Christmas Shoes, because yeah I was totally inspired by the sappy Christmas song xD
I've been slowly chipping away at a fic focused on Sonic and Tails's second Christmas together and going for sentimental, classic Christmas special vibes <3
âBetter watch out! Ya know where pesky little brothers wind up when they donât listen to their super cool big brothers around Christmas? The naughty list!â Sonic drove his fist between Tailsâs ears, not hard enough to hurt, just enough to get him squirming.
âOh yeah? Well, jokeâs on you! Iâm always on the naughty list!â
It was said with such conviction that Sonic stilled immediately. Tails wriggled out of his hold and rolled away with a triumphant laugh, flopping onto his back a few feet away. Grinning, he pushed himself up onto his elbows, ready to goad Sonic into another tussle as his tails happily swished through the snow, but Sonic didnât look like he was in the mood to play.
âSonic?â Tails sat up further, leaning forward to rest his paws in the V of his legs. âDid I kick you on accident? Iâm sorry.â
Sonic shook his head. âNo, you didnât. I just⌠you were just saying that as a joke, right?â
Tails cocked his head to one side. âWhat? About you not being my big brother?â His eyes suddenly went wide as he lurched forward. âOf course thatâs a joke! Iâm sorry, Iâll listen to you better, I promise. I still wanna be brothers, I didnât mean itâ!â
âNot that,â Sonic cut him off abruptly. âI meant the thing about the naughty list. Obviously we were only kidding around and you donât actually think that, right Tails?â Sonic drummed his fingers against the icy ground when Tails just sat back and grabbed onto one of his tails. âRight Tails?â
âYou look mad.â
âIâm not mad,â Sonic said firmly.
âYou sound mad,â Tails mumbled.
âI said Iâm not mad.â Though Sonicâs eyes flashed with impatience as his temper flared. âI just want an honest answer outta ya for once.â
âBut it doesnât look like you do,â Tails argued. âYou donât want me to say âyes.ââ
Sonic blinked, his quills finally relaxing once he realized theyâd bristled in the first place. âHey, it doesnât matter what I want or donât want you to say, bud,â he said, his tone gentling. âDonât worry about any of that. You can always be honest with me, no matter what you think Iâll feel about what you say. Got it?â Sonic waited for Tails to meet his gaze with a solemn nod. âWhy do you think youâre on the naughty list?â
âBecause Santaâs never brought me a present before,â he answered. âAnd the songs all say he only brings presents to good kids. So that means Iâm always on the naughty list, doesnât it?â
Struck speechless, Sonic could only stare at him while his brain did the equivalent of blue screening. Logically speaking it made sense that heâd draw that conclusion, but at the same time⌠At the same time it was so utterly absurd that Tails was of the impression that heâd been perma-banned from the good list somehow that it broke Sonicâs brain right in two.

aughhh sonic going back in time to visit little two yr old tails as been in my brain for what feels like forever! like how many dots does he end up connecting? how does he have the strength to not travel back further and knock the daylights out of tailsâs mom? how does he react to the whole kukku invasion and forest fire? so many questionsâŚaaaaa im so excited for this fic i will be in ruins. in ruins, i tell you
also with the whole sonic punching tailsâs mom thing: you were talking about tails and his parents, but like sonic interacting (or just seeing) tailsâs parents is always something ive thought about. idk, im curious about what your take on that would be, if you have one. (sorry if youâve already answered something like this ahshhshs)
your boys are just spinning around in my brain constantly. they are living in there completely rent free. i adore them sm, they make me sick. anytime thereâs a reference or parallel to something in their past, it hurts. these boys need therapy immediately. maybe even before immediately. your portrayal of them is such a huge inspiration istg
anyway, sorry this is kinda all over the place đ i just had a bunch of thoughts and threw them together in the most coherent way i could lol. hope you have a good rest of your night/day! stay safe out there đŠľ
So, I was saving this because it really inspired me to write a little something, and it felt fitting because I live for your baby Tails and Sonic art, it's seriously the best boost of serotonin for me xD I'm sorry it took a minute to get to this, and I'll address the second idea you had in another ask (someone else was on the same wavelength as you around this time, and also asked about Sonic and Tails and Tails's parents xD).
But for now, please accept a continuation of the back in time shenanigans <3
Sonic Back In Time Shenanigans WIP #2: Back for the Luggage
Tracking down a second Chaos Emerald so he could skip back in time for an afternoon wasnât how Sonic saw himself spending the past few days. Though, to be fair, he spent a good chunk of them trying to ignore the very itch encouraging him to give into this particular whim of the week, but impulse control wasnât Sonic the Hedgehogâs claim to fame. Not by a long shot.
His curiosity had been piqued. New insight into the lore of his little brotherâs life before heâd ever crossed his path niggled at his mind no matter how far and fast he ran from the temptation to take a peek. The glimpse heâd got on that rainy night hadnât been all that reassuring, with Tails so small and sick and the time Sonic got to spend with him in that dusty, stuffy cabin all too brief.
Cocoa Island. Heâd looked it up after he and Silver returned to Sonicâs present, their respective futures stabilized for the time being, but he couldnât find much information on it. If it wasnât for the fact that Sonic could chart it on a map, it almost seemed like it didnât even exist.
Historic records mentioned studies of the volcanic activity on the island more than a decade ago. Mines had also been dug out in the cave systems throughout the island long before Sonic had been born, in search of potential esoteric energy sources.
The Chaos Emeralds, no doubt.
But other than that, it seemed the island had never been properly settled. Sonic couldâve flown over in the Tornado for a quick jauntârunning to small islands never boded well for him, they were always tricky to aim forâbut he knew it wouldnât have the answers he was itching to find out.
And sure, the big one was already answered. The sick baby fox heâd had to leave behind in the care of some flickies after that rainy night obviously made a full recovery, or else Tails wouldnât be alive in Sonicâs present, off on his own adventure. Flying solo. Alone.
But knowing that without actually seeing it, experiencing it for himself, didnât satisfy Sonic in the slightest. He was all about experiences. And he wanted to experience this mysterious chapter of his best budâs life, one he never really let himself think all that hard on.
So, that was how Sonic found himself on a nearly deserted island eight years in the past with two Chaos Emeralds in hand. It was warmer than in his present, willing to bet they were somewhere in spring or early summer as opposed to late fall, but the dense cover of pine trees kept the forest floor cool in its shade. Allergies tickled his nose, prompting Sonic to scratch at it as he took in his surroundings. Flickies sang throughout the branches, their chirps a comforting song accompanied by the steady hum of insects hidden in the brush. With his own curious hum, Sonic picked a direction and ran with itâer, walked with it. He took it slow for the moment, trying to find his way back to the cabin from that night. It seemed like his best bet to start his search for Tails.
Until a childâs voice somewhere in the forest caught his ear, both perking up and flicking towards the sound with an instinctive pull as everything else faded into the background. A breath Sonic hadnât realized heâd been holding lifted from his chest. The child sounded light, healthy. No coughing or crying as far as he could tell.Â
Sonic followed the voice to a clearing. Unlike the stormy day heâd first stumbled in on, sunlight flooded the patch of grass between the trees with its warm beams. One fell across a tree stump where a two-tailed fox kit lay sprawled across on his tummy, bright-eyed and bushy tails further confirmation that heâd made a full recovery. Sonicâs shoulders sagged with relief as he observed him from the brush, his own green eyes lighting up as he realized he was playing. Making motor sounds with his mouth, Tails rolled a toy airplane through the long, wild grass. His tongue poked out as he accidentally blew raspberries amidst his very serious airplane noises.
âPfftââ Sonicâs laugh nearly sputtered out of him, cut off only by the fact that the kid heard him and froze.
Ears swiveled in his direction, but Tails couldnât see him through the trees from his spot on the stump. The toy airplane fell to the grass with a soft thump as the baby fox squirmed and tried to hoist himself up into a sitting position, his two blue boots dangling just over the edge as his bare hands planted themselves on the wood between them to support himself. One tail flicked up and down with excitement while the other twitched limply against the tree stump, like it didnât know it could lift itself up like its twin.
âMom?â he called out, and the hope in his voice ensnared Sonicâs heart in a vice. âMom!â
âAh, sorry, little guy. Not mom.â Sonic stepped out from behind the brush with his hands up, a sheepish smile on his face. âJust me. Long time no see.â
His tails immediately wilted as the bright-eyed, eager expression on his face retracted into something shy and pensive. But not scared, Sonic noted. There wasnât a trace of fear in his eyes.
âRemember me? I stayed with you during that rainstorm the other night,â Sonic added, hoping to jog the little guyâs memory, but he didnât actually know how long it had been since that night.Â
He didnât have Silverâs neat little time travel gizmos. His comm couldnât pinpoint where he was in time, only in space. Which meant he couldnât stay long, because if Tails or anyone else tried to ping his location, itâd probably come up blank.Â
The Tails sitting in front of him drew his legs up, curling into himself a bit the closer Sonic got. Okay, well maybe he was a little afraid. Sonic stopped short of reaching the tree stump, hoping a reassuring smile would get him the rest of the way.
âMy nameâs Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog. Whatâs yours?â
Tails stared at him for a moment, until his gaze slowly slid past him to focus on the tree line behind him. Sonic planted his hands on his hips and canted his head back to see if anything was there, but aside from the buzz of insects and rustling of flickies in the leaves, the forest was still. No one else but the two of them smack dab in the middle of it.
ââŚMom?â Tails whispered, grabbing onto one of his tails to hold.
Sonicâs smile slowly slid off his muzzle. In all the time heâd known Tails, heâd never once called for his mom. Not a single cry. By the time he came into Tailsâs life, whatever innate trust heâd had for this faceless person had completely evaporated. There was only one person Tails had ever called out for, ever cried for, ever searched for when he was lost or scared or lonely.
Sonic swallowed thickly. âI donât know where your mom is, bud. You waiting for her?â Tails nodded with the most intense certainty, his ears flopping forward and back with the force of it. âDid she⌠did she say when sheâs coming back?âÂ
This time Tails pursed his mouth as he thought carefully about his answer, his pensive expression the same one heâd still make to this day when he debated how to explain something to him. If he should explain something to him. If he should give his big bro a glimpse into the inner workings of his big brain, or if itâd be easierâsaferâto keep it all to himself.
And just whereâd he pick up that particular trick?
But this Tails was young enoughâhadnât been hurt enoughâto trust someone who looked like a grown-up, so he slowly shook his head in response, wide blue eyes gazing up at him like thereâd be some sort of prize if he answered all the questions correctly.Â
Sonicâs brow furrowed. âDo you know how long itâs been since you last saw her?â
âLong.â The small, squeaky voice was so matter-of-fact, Sonic nearly fell over with the sheer amount of joy a single syllable filled him with; his little broâs attitude had been baked into him from the start.
âIâll bet,â he huffed out a chuckle, choosing to sit cross-legged in the grass so he wasnât towering over Tails like some kind of threat. âYou like planes?â Sonic glanced meaningfully at the toy plane still discarded in the grass.
Tails glanced down at it, the tip of his tail in his mouth as he gently chewed on it. âMmhm.â
Though Tails had long-outgrown the habit of chewing on his own tails, Sonic would still occasionally catch him nibbling on the ends of pens and pencils when he was deep in thought or starting to get hungry. Or, at least, he used to. Back before Sonic had been captured and Tails had been out on his own for six monthsâŚ
âI like âem, too,â Sonic piped up with a grin. âProbably my favorite way to travel! Second to running, of course.â
Tails blinked at him, head canting to one side. Sonicâs smile grew and he scooched forward a couple inches, steadily closing the gap between them.
âYâsee, runningâs sort of my thing. What kinda things do you like to do?â
Tails glanced down at the toy plane again, then up at the sky. He pointed shyly at the white, puffy clouds slowly floating by overhead. Sonic followed his gaze, unable to help the way his smile crooked to one side.
âYou like to watch the clouds?â Sonic filled in for him, beaming when Tails nodded. âMe too. You ever look for shapes in âem?â
The little guyâs brow furrowed. âShapes?â
Sonic laughed as the perplexed, and ultimately unconvinced, expression remained fixed on Tailsâs face. âCâmere, Iâll show ya!â
Unceremoniously flopping onto his back, face turned towards the sky, Sonic patted the grass beside him. Though they were mostly shielded by the thick cover of trees, a light breeze still wafted down into the clearing and carried the salty scent of the sea with it. The stands of grass tickled Sonicâs side as he laid back and took a deep breath, listening for the familiar patter of eager footsteps following his lead.
Except they didnât come.
Sonic pushed himself up onto his elbows. Tails was still curled up atop the tree stump, chewing on the tip of his tail as he watched him with worry in his eyes. Worry that had no place being there in a kid so young.
So Sonic cracked another smile. âDonât worry. The floorâs not lava,â he teased, but it was something the toddler obviously didnât understand. âItâs safe, bud. Iâm not gonna hurt ya. Promise.â
Tailsâs gaze darted to the treeline again, searching amongst their thick trunks and low-hanging branches before snapping back to Sonic. âMm⌠sâpposed to wait here,â he mumbled, his words sounding a little thick as some of his syllables slurred together in a mouth that was still so small, but ultimately what heâd said was clear enough for Sonic to understand.
His smile slowly faded as he processed the simple explanation; the same feeling rising in the back of his throat as when he sat with a sick Tails in the cabin while the kid asked if he could go home. âYour mom tell ya that?â
Tails nodded. âWait here. Be good.â His little face scrunched up in a look of pure, earnest determination. âWait here anâ be good, then mom will come back. She said⌠she said.â
But she wouldnât.
No one would.
And maybe Tails already knew that. Even if he didnât want to believe that someone he loved would leave him, heâd always been a smart kid. Tailsâs tiny claws caught in the fur of his tail as he clung tighter to itâlike he could physically cling to the hope that his mom would still come back if he did this one thing really well.
If he did his very best.
âLook Sonic, I made this for you!â
âSonic, Iâve made some adjustments to the Tornadoâs aerodynamics, so her base speed has more than doubled! Pretty cool, huh?â
âI made a radar to help us track the Chaos Emeralds faster!â
âI still need to optimize your Extreme Gearâs turning radius and acceleration for your next race. Itâs not good enough.â
âThe Cyclone still has a ways to go in terms of balancing its different modes of transport. Itâs just not good enough at land or air travel yet.â
âIâm wildly inconsistent. Iâm just a burden to you. Iâm not good enough.â
Not good enough.
Sonicâs fingers dug a little firmer into the soft, damp soil beneath the grass. âWell, I mean, ya gotta get off that stump sometimes. What about when you get hungry? You leave to go get food, dontcha?â
Tails stiffened, fur frizzed up like heâd been caught with his hand in the proverbial mint chocolate chip cookie jar. âDonât tell,â he pleaded, eyes wide as panicked tears welled up. âIâm sorryââ
âWoah. Hey, hey, hey,â Sonic sat up straighter so he could lift his hands, using them to make a calming gesture as Tailsâs little chest started to heave with each little gasp. âEasy there, bud. Iâm not gonna tell her.â
ââŚNot?â
Despite the storm brewing just beneath the surface, faced with further confirmation that Tails had never truly felt safe or wanted, he refused to scare the kid with its intensity. Offering up a kind smile and reassurance, Sonic held up a finger to his mouth. Like they were keeping secrets from some nameless authority figure theyâd never shared.Â
âI wonât tell if you wonât.â
Tailsâs ears perked up and the grip on his tail eased up. âMâkayâŚâ
âMâkay,â Sonic mimicked, smile growing as he watched Tails scrub at his face with the fur of his forearm. âCâmere, kiddo. Watch the clouds with me.â
Tails looked at him for a moment, then scooted closer to the edge of the tree stump. He swung one leg over, then the other, his little boots scraping against the bark as he eased himself down. He was a little off-balance as he toddled over. Both arms splayed out to steady himself as one tail flicked up and the other was dragged behind him, still as limp and awkward as it had been on the stump.
Sonicâs gaze narrowed in on it immediately. âDidja hurt your tail?â
Tails paused and craned his neck back, wobbling a little as he tried to look behind him. âNo,â he answered simply.
âThen how come itâs not up like your other one?â
Tails reached behind him and picked up the limp appendage, hugging it to his chest. âDoesnât do it.â
Sonicâs frown deepened. âLet me see it.â
Tails didnât even hesitate. He let go of his tail as he waddled right over to him. He turned his back to him, giving him complete access to the part of his body he protected the most. Sonic was the only one heâd learned to trust with them over the years, but heâd had to earn it.Â
Sonic gently ran his fingers through the fur, watching his baby brotherâs posture for any sign of discomfort. He didnât flinch, but his good tail started wagging almost immediately, thwacking Sonic in the side of the face.Â
âCareful with that,â he chuckled, catching it in a loose hold when it smacked him again. âYou could take someoneâs eye out with one of these bad boys. Here, hold onto this for me.â
He waited for Tails to grab onto his eager tail, hugging it hard when it wiggled uncontrollably. âSâtryna get away,â he giggled.
âOh boy, better get a good grip. Itâs a slippery one, that tail,â Sonic laughed, using the distraction to his advantage as he palpated along the base of the weaker tail with his fingertips.
There was barely any muscle to it, and the fur was patchy and matted, flattened in a way that his other tail clearly wasnât, even though his fur overall couldâve used a good brushing. But it wasnât injured, no welts or bruises or cuts. It was just⌠weak. Like it was developing slower than its twin. Heâd caught a glimpse of it that night where he was sick, but now that he was getting a good look at it, the differences between the two were stark. He couldnât imagine why; Sonicâs brain literally wouldnât let him conceive of a situation where this would happenâwhere Tails wasnât allowed to use one tail to the same extent as the other.
Whatever had caused this had reversed itself by the time Sonic met Tails, both little propellers of equal strength. At least, he thought they were. To be fair, heâd only been eleven and he hadnât looked all that closely at them. And Tails barely let him patch him up from where heâd been smacked around by bullies or badniks in those first few weeks.
Idly petting along the length of his tail, Sonic stilled when it spasmed against his palm. Just looking at it, heâd have thought he accidentally pulled on it or snagged his fur, but there was a gentle rumbling sound emanating from Tailsâs chest that assured him otherwise. Sonic flicked his gaze up to see Tails watching him, a smile on his face while he purred openly. His tail jerked in his hold again. It was trying to wag.
Sonicâs shoulders sagged, his own smile lopsided as he let his tail slip from his grasp. âAll clear. Time to park those two tails of yours right here on the runway.â
Tails squeaked as Sonic nabbed him around the middle, but dissolved into a fit of giggles as he was lifted up and plopped down on the grass next to him. Kicking up one leg over the other, Sonic laid back once again, arms pillowed behind his head as he let out a contented sigh. Beside him, Tails laid back and wiggled a bit to get comfortable, both tails swept to the same side so they wouldnât get pinched underneath him. He tilted his head up to look at the sky, the same color reflected back in his eyes.
âShapes?â he asked.
âYeah, weâre gonna look for shapes, little buddy,â Sonic hummed. âGo ahead and tell me what ya find.â
Tails considered the sky for a moment, then pointed at a blob above them. âOval.â
A sharp laugh burst right out of Sonic. âSorry, sorry,â he wheezed when Tails pouted at him. âNot those kinda shapes, pal. Iâm talking things like flickies or flowers or chili dogs! But good first try. Iâm thinking that one looks more like⌠a whale.â
âWhale?â
âUh-huh. See the tail?â Sonic removed one hand from behind his head so he could trace the oblong cloud as it faintly curved upwards at the end, making sure Tailsâs eyes followed where he pointed. âAnd thereâs its fin. And the wispy bits at the top are like the water shooting out of its spout.â
âSpout,â Tails echoed, blinking up at it like he was trying to solve a puzzle.Â
âYeah, you know. Like when they come up from the water and all that mist sprays from that hole on top of their heads likeâŚâ A devious grin spread across Sonicâs face before he looped his arm around Tails and dragged him close enough to blow a raspberry against his cheek with a loud, âpbbbbbbfffft!â
Tails squealed, legs kicking as he squirmed about instinctively, but made no move to pull away entirely. The ticklish sensation buzzed through him like a bunch of tiny butterflies; the feeling silly, unfamiliar, and almost overwhelming all at once. He eventually pawed at Sonicâs muzzle, pushing it away from the fluffy, baby fur of his cheek, but he was smiling and laughing as he looked over at him, eyes shining with delight.
âWas that funny?â Sonic snickered.
âYeah!â Tails beamed at him, his tails beating an inconsistent rhythm against the grass. âYouâre funny.â
âIâm funny?â Sonic feigned offense. âExcuse me, but seems to me like youâre the funny one, wiggling around over here like a cup of sparkle gelatin!â
âNo!â Tails squeaked, curling up when Sonic poked him in the tummy.Â
âNo?â Sonic eased back, reminding himself to reign it in a bit so he could figure out if the ânoâ was just in play or if he was serious.Â
As much as he wanted to give this little guy something to smile and laugh about while he was out here on his ownâand it was so easy, it was almost intoxicating when he hadnât seen his brotherâs smile in weeksâhe didnât want to overwhelm the kid. But as he let him go and pulled back, a panicked look flashed in Tailsâs eyes. His smile fell and a fear that was too big for a guy so small replaced it as he froze up.
âHey, itâs okay. Youâre okay.â Sonic lowered his voice, but even that didnât stop the tears from suddenly sprouting in the corners of his eyes. âWas that too much? Sorry, kiddo. Not really used to you like this. I donât know your limits.â
Tails didnât answer him, probably because he didnât know how. He was a baby, after all. Four-year-old Tails had often had trouble expressing how he felt or what he wanted. And heck, even ten-year-old Tails was still facing that particular issue. He couldnât expect a maybe-two-year-old to knowâŚ
Tailsâs tiny paw reached for Sonicâs arm, the light touch barely registering as anything other than an itch before his fingers curled into his fur. Sonic stared at his hand for a second, then immediately darted to his face. Tails sniffed, muzzle quivering as he held back his tears.
Always sucking it up. Always putting on a brave face. Always trying to be a big kid, like his big bro.
Even when he was just a baby.
âItâs okay,â Sonic repeated, his arm curling around Tails again. âIâm right here, itâs okay.â
Tails nestled against his side, nuzzling his face against him with a shiver and a barely suppressed whimper. âMom⌠dadâŚâ
The storm returned with a white-hot flash of frustration and resentment. Sonic directed his glare at the cloud whale lazily floating past them, since he couldnât look the people responsible for this in the eyes. Not that he particularly wanted to. If they never crossed paths, his and Tails lives would only continue on for the better. That was one thing he was still certain of. There was nothing in the universe that could convince him otherwise.
Not even the baby who desperately wanted them.
But he didnât know any better. They were all he knew.Â
Releasing a long sigh, Sonic let go of the past and pulled himself back into the presentâor, well, two-year-old Tailsâs present anyway. He patted Tailsâs side, then ruffled his fur a bit when he cuddled closer. His fur tickled as he rubbed his little face against his ribs, so Sonic scooched him up a bit more until his cheek was pillowed against his shoulder.
âSorry if I scared you, bud,â he hummed, watching as one of Tailsâs ears twitched from the lull of his voice. âDidnât mean to. Youâre safe with me, okay? When Iâm around, Iâm always gonna do whatever it takes to keep you safe.â
Tails tipped his head back to watch him, silently absorbing his words, even if he didnât understand them. But as Sonic looked down at him, he saw his four-year-old brother snuggling up to him in a storm and his six-year-old brother falling asleep on him during a movie and his eight-year-old brother trying to be strong for Sonic as they lost another friend⌠He could see all of Tails in the way he looked at him, every moment where he let Sonic see a little of that vulnerability he always tried so hard to hide.
He could even see his ten-year-old brother, hundreds of miles away, determined to bury that vulnerable little kid for good, somewhere Sonic would never find him. And that was fine. If that was what Tails wanted, then Sonic wanted that for him. He wanted Tails to feel confident and capable and every bit the hero Sonic saw in him every day.
âAnd even when Iâm not here⌠when you canât see me? Iâll still be with you. Wherever you go, whatever you face, you wonât have to do it alone.â
Tails sniffed, then lifted his head to gaze up at him. âPomise?â
Sonicâs breath hitched, his eyes as wide as saucers as the fox kit whoâd only known him for a few minutes at most looked at him with nothing but trust. âYeah. I promise.â He had to clear his throat, then tugged Tails up to sit on his chest. âYouâve got no idea just how stuck with me you are, keed.â
âNo idea,â Tails repeated, shaking his head with the utmost seriousness a two-year-old could express.
Sonicâs laughter traveled through him and right up into Tails, the two of them shaking with it. The feeling of being bounced about coaxed a few giggles out of Tails and he nearly slid off his unsteady perch. But Sonicâs hands supported him, holding tight so he wouldnât fall.
âYouâre the best thing thatâs ever happened to me,â Sonic choked out as his laughter petered out on a breathless sigh. âDonât ever forget that, okay?â
âMâkay,â Tails agreed.
âMâkay.â With one hand remaining on Tailsâs waist, Sonic lifted the other to poke him on the tip of his nose, grinning at the way he went cross-eyed from following his finger. âIâm gonna follow up on that in eight years, yâknow, so better work on committing that to memory, stat.â
âMâkay.â
âI mean it. Thereâll be a test and everything.â
âMâkay.â
âYouâre so agreeable,â Sonic sighed, closing his eyes as he laid his head back, leaving the comfortable weight of the baby fox on his abdomen. âI donât think I know what to do with a little bro that actually listens to me.â
He felt Tails squirm a bit, one knee digging into his ribs as he attempted to scoot further up, then a finger lightly tapped Sonic on the tip of his nose. One green eye cracked open, immediately greeted with a pair of pleased blue ones and a wagging fox tail. Despite the fact that it was pinned beneath him, pressed into the grass, Sonic felt his tail give a jerky little wag, too.
âShapes?â Tails asked.
âYou wanna look for more shapes in the clouds?â Sonic waited for Tailsâs eager nod before turning him around and laying him back in the grass beside him. âYou got it, bud! You need a redemption round, after all. Letâs see what kinda shapes you can find this time.â
Tails hummed, contemplative gaze fixed on the clouds for a good minute before he pointed slightly to his left. âFloor!â
âFloor?â Sonic squinted up at the cloud, making sure he was looking at the right one. âOh, âflower!â Yeah, that does kinda look like a tulip flower. Good eye, kiddo.â
Tails nodded proudly. âMmhm. Floor.â
âFlower,â Sonic repeated, and even made the sign for it, touching each side of his nose with his fingertips, like he was smelling a flower.
âFloor-er.â
âClose enough,â he chuckled. âOh, okay, now that one looks like a crab claw. Like from a crabmeat.â Grinning devilishly, Sonic made a claw-like grabby motion at Tails with his hand while the little guy laughed. âOr, yâknow, an actual crab.â
They watched the clouds, picking more shapes out of them until Tailsâs stomach started growling. Sonic quickly sped through the forest to gather up whatever kind of fruits or vegetables were available on the island, eventually settling on some peaches, plums, and cherries. He grabbed them from the other side of the island, so as not to take from anywhere Tails was likely to forage on his own. He liked the plums and peaches, the sticky juice staining his muzzle as it dripped from his hands. He kept trying to lick his fingers clean while Sonic wiped the fur around his mouth so it wouldnât bother him later when it dried. He didnât care for the cherries as much, but Sonic still left a small stash of them and the leftover peaches at the base of the tree stump.
With a full tummy and sticky paws, Tails let out a big, squeaky yawn before he curled up on top of the tree stump. His tails covered him like a blanket as he settled down for a nap, giving Sonic just the out he needed. Heâd been debating how to head back to his present time without sounding any alarms for Tails. He honestly wasnât sure heâd be able to if the kid just looked at him with those sad eyes, like he was being abandoned all over again.
But if Tails was asleep, then maybe this would all have felt like just a dream. Sonic had just wanted to check on him after leaving him so abruptly that first time, and then he figured it couldnât hurt to give him one good afternoon. There would be so many days where heâd be on his own after this, so many months before their paths would cross. One afternoon where a stranger showed him kindness and played with him wasnât going to break the time stream, but even Sonic knew it couldnât really go further than that.
âIâd break time lines for that kid.â His own words echoed at the back of his mind, the certainty heâd felt at the time faltering when faced with the sleepy face of a baby fox who wasnât supposed to have met him yet. It wasnât so simple.
Sonic waited until Tailsâs breaths were deep and steady, arms wrapped around the weaker tail while the stronger one blanketed him with its fluff. Smoothing down his bangs with his thumb, Sonic gently stroked the top of his head and scritched behind his ear.
âLove ya, little bro,â he whispered.
Things would be okay, Sonic reminded himself as he backed out of the clearing, picking up the two emeralds that were his ticket back to his time. Because they were okay in the present. Even if Tails wouldnât be there when he returned, they would still be okay. Eventually. They always came out on top. Sonic still believed that.
If there was anything he still believed in above all else, it was Tails.
So, to be fair, when he left the Poloy Forest that afternoon, it had been with the intention that this wouldnât happen again.
But then, Sonic the Hedgehogâs impulse control wasnât his claim to fame, was it?

A/N: Anyway, just wanted to say thank you again, 0vergrown, and that I appreciate you so much! I'm so happy you're interested in this little side plot I've got brewing and all the angst potential that it holds <3 I have so many little scenes I want to write for them, you have no idea! Hope this scratches a bit of the itch for more of these boys who need so much therapy. So much...
And thank you everyone else who's also interested in this idea! Much love to all of you!
do you have any tips of writing fluff? (Specifically the unbreakable bond :) )
Yeah, of course! Happy to offer to some tips on writing fluff :)
I feel like fluff and angst are two sides of the same coin; a little often goes a long way for both. Emotional gut punches can hit a lot harder when the rest of the fluff/angst isn't too heavy-handed. But it also depends on the tone of the story, the pacing. Is it a chapter fic where we're going to see character arcs or is it a single scene, a snapshot of a moment?
Buckle up for a quick crash course in fluff!
Structure and Pacing
For multi-chapters, I like to sprinkle the fluff throughout so I'm not overloading the reader with a sugar rush. I try to have some kind of sweet, light moment every four or five scenes to stay invested and hooked on why the relationships between characters are so important.
Character is the driving force behind a lot of my writing, they inform the plot and it adapts around them. Giving the characters these spaced out fluffy scenes also gives the readers a chance to breathe and soak everything in. Like a pit stop while running a marathon to grab some water or a snack to recharge!
For a one shot, I can get away with the fluff being more concentrated; go all in on the specific feeling I want to evoke (comfort, contentment, laughter, security, unconditional love, etc.) If it feels like too much to the point that it's sickly sweet, I can always shave off some of the fluff and make it more palatable, but going big in a one shot at least gives me a goal to aim for and lets me know what I personally want out of a fic.
Author's Intent
And what you want out of a fluff fic is also an important piece to consider. Fluff is self-indulgent by nature. It's something you wish you could see if time limits, budgets, and marketability played no part in the show/game/media that you love. When the writer is genuinely invested in what they're writing, that feeling also reaches the reader and makes it matter to them, too!
Characterization and Emotional Layers
If you're concerned about your fluff feeling believable or in character, establish a baseline for character interactions in their downtime, with low stakes. In the case for Sonic and Tails, I can see this as traveling for fun or trashing an Eggman base. Figure out how comfortable and familiar they are with each other normally, then build on that.
So let's take an example of Sonic and Tails sharing a victory together after taking down a surprise boss in an Eggman base.
Baseline: Sonic and Tails fist bump each other. It comes naturally, second nature, easy and they don't think too hard on it.
1st fluff layer: Sonic musses up the fur on Tails's head or slings an arm around his shoulder. Also comes naturally, but it's highlighting how comfortable they are with each other. There's usually a secondary emotion involved with these gestures (Sonic might be feeling proud, playful, or trying to subtly de-escalate any stress or worries Tails might be feeling. Tails's reaction to this also makes a difference - does he bat him away playfully to keep the air between them light and fun? Or does he lean into the touch because he needs the reassurance or because Sonic needs the reassurance?)
2nd fluff layer: Tails flies at Sonic and is scooped up/tossed in the air/swung around for a victory pose. Excitement at its peak for them both, they can't contain it. They instinctively reach for each other because they want to share their joy with each other. Tails riding the high of his success or accomplishment and immediately seeking out Sonic, while Sonic is just as eager to support and cheer his little buddy on. He always believes in him, but seeing Tails believe in himself is such a treat.
Building on existing canon dynamics like this can keep characters still feeling like themselves even if they're behaving in a way we haven't actually seen much evidence for. Like, Sonic is frequently pictured with guitars so we can assume he knows how to play. We don't know whether or not he would play the guitar to comfort Tails in a storm or after a nightmare, but it's not necessarily a stretch to imagine that.
Now, this is just if getting characters to feel like canon depictions matters to you as a writer. I personally straddle the line: I look to canon for guidance, but ultimately I've spent 30 years with my own ideas for these characters marinating in my head, so at the end of the day I'm probably just going to do what feels right to me. Don't let canon become restrictive to the point that it chokes all the creativity out of you. Use it to fuel your inspiration!
All this being said, when it comes to fluff, the most important piece of all is "does it make you, the writer, happy?" If it makes your heart flutter and you have to stop writing mid-sentence to press your hands over your face and groan, "I just can't with these two!" then you're on the right track!
hi thereeeeee ^_^ i was wondering if you had any thoughts on gangle and zoobles love languages :3
Hi!! :D Oh, yay! I'm so excited to get a Gangle and Zooble question! <3 Thank you for stopping by!
This is a really good one. While the love languages aren't backed by scientific data and aren't enough on their own to describe the complexities of what goes into human relationships, they can be a good place to start identifying patterns of behavior or where a partner might feel like they're not being supported in some way or how to communicate your needs in a way that your partner can understand.
So here are my thoughts on Gangle and Zooble's approaches to showing/receiving love beneath the cut! Because apparently I had a lot to say, lol:
Initially I thought Zooble gravitated towards quality time as their main way of showing love, since they're the one to suggest drawing with Gangle as a way to spend more time with her and purposefully seek her out to make sure she isn't alone at the end of episode 4, despite coming across as someone who prefers to be on their own in the first couple of episodes. But starting in episode 6, they pretty much find a way to initiate touch with Gangle in every episode going forward, especially in episodes 8 and 9 where they just leave their hand on her shoulder for extended periods of time, which made me rethink their preferred approach to expressing and receiving love.
I think Zooble is most comfortable expressing love by initiating physical touch. They want their presence and support to be felt by the person they love, so they naturally reach out and use their body to show and provide that reassurance. I think it's also a way for them to try liking their body a bit more too. If it can be used for something good, like showing love and affection and giving pleasure, then maybe they won't hate it so much.
I like to think they start taking the initiative in episode 6 to start initiating casual touches with Gangle because she trusted them with her comedy mask first, solidifying how close the two of them have become and giving Zooble permission to reciprocate. But while touch is how they might show their love, it's not always how they prefer to receive love, and honestly it's probably for the same reason. They don't like their body, they don't feel connected to it. If it's being touched outside of their control, it makes them aware of it in a way they're not always ready for. They definitely don't like being touched casually by most people and can get kind of cagey and distant when their partner is the one initiating touch if they're not in the right headspace for it. I think it is the biggest display of trust for them to let someone touch them first, so they need time to build up to that.
A more successful way of showing Zooble love initially would be through quality time. I think being in the presence of the person they love helps regulate them. If they're in an awful mood, just sitting next to Gangle on the couch and watching her draw relaxes them. Just knowing that they're allowed to take up space without doing or saying anything and that there's a place for them with her is enough to soothe them and get them to open up a bit more. Pushing with Zooble doesn't work, they'll just pull away and put up walls. But just sitting with them first, accepting them as they are, is how they feel safe enough to open up and accept other displays of love.
I like to imagine, post-finale, when they're seeking affection, they'll start by lying next to Gangle while she draws, eventually laying their head in her lap to receive head scratches or other grounding touches to help them feel centered in themself. They'll also gravitate towards being the little spoon, letting Gangle wrap herself around them so they can feel her touch all over. They say it's for her at first, since she's used to sleeping with body pillows, but it's also because they really, really like being cuddled and wrapped up in her.
Now Gangle on the other hand... I think she has more of an anxious attachment style, where she needs clear reassurance that her partner doesn't secretly want to abandon her for something better. She looks down on herself so much and gets stuck in this negative perception of herself that I think words of affirmation are what help her. Being told that she's loved and accepted and wanted replaces the negative self-talk in her head and gives her something to cling to.
Zooble ends up getting really good at giving pep talks because Gangle needs to hear the words as well as feel their presence physically. She'll never say no to cuddling, of course - she loves cuddling with Zooble - but it helps to hear verbally that she has permission to act on what she wants. The tone of voice matters, too, so Zooble softening their words for her goes a long way to making her feel safe and loved.
But she's not as good at speaking up, so she often resorts to showing her love rather than speaking it into existence. She gives gifts in the form of her art, and quality time is also a way of her showing that she trusts someone to share in her interests. If she's sharing her favorite anime with someone, risking their opinion on something she holds dear and whether or not it will affect the way her partner sees her, that's a true display of trust and love. If she's letting Zooble watch her draw, she feels safe enough that she doesn't have to perform for them. It's opening up to show parts of herself unguarded, unmasked, without fear of judgment.
Once she's more regulated and secure in her relationship with Zooble, though, she's able to freely speak her words of affirmation, too. She tells them how they've made a mark on her life, how much they mean to her, how beautiful they are, how handsome, how they're everything she could ever want. Words might not affect Zooble in the same way, but they know how important they are to Gangle and that she wouldn't say things if she didn't mean them. And they still deserve to hear them. So she loves showering them with compliments and assurances that they're enough for her, just as they are.
But yeah, those are some of my thoughts on how they tend to show and receive love from one another! I think there are a lot of ways to interpret how they express their love though - like, you could also make the argument that touch is Gangle's preferred love language, so Zooble going out of their way to touch her is for her sake and that their preferred love language is acts of service. And again, the love languages aren't rigid labels that people get locked into, they're more of a vocabulary tool to help people find the words to express what they need from their partner and to also help them pay attention to how they actually react to/initiate affection.
Thanks for asking about this though! It was fun to think about and I always love dissecting Gangle and Zooble as characters and as a couple <3
