MORE jason todd hcs nobody asked for!!
very conscious of utility usage, and generally tries to minimize it as much as possible whenever heās at somebody elseās home. he shares this habit with steph, who also grew up knowing the danger of unaffordable utility bills
due to costs, his parents forever stuck to budget phones with prepaid phone plans and minimal data coverage. things like fancy tvs, entertainment subscriptions, wifi devices, and videogames were just not on the table, and the monthly allotment of prepaid cell data was rationed carefully for emergencies only. this, in turn, led to catherine introducing jason to libraries early - they had free wifi she could connect her phone to, they offered free educational programming for kids, hosted and facilitated free services for the public, and best of all, gave jason access to books - an unlimited form of entertainment that was safe, transportable, required zero electricity, and could be done solo without adult supervision. what had initially been a trip of pure practicality turned into one of joy and bonding, and cathy and willis were insufferably proud of how jasonās passion for reading translated to academic success when he was finally old enough for public school
money was scarce, and jason was bright, and cathy and will instilled in him early-on to strive for academic success no matter what, because āNobodyāll ever be able to take that away from you, and the more school you get, the better your chances of getting out of here.ā his 6yo dream, before things got bad, was to become the smartest doctor-astronaut-scientist ever (between being a world-famous accomplished author of course) with a bazillion dollars so as to buy his parents a big humongous house with looooots of rooms and central air, so that theyād never have to go out and work again and could instead spend time with him
willis and catherine loved him and loved each other. that doesnāt mean they were functional, stable, or ready to take on the challenges of parenthood. they messed up a lot, and some of jasonās sweetest memories are juxtaposed with some of the worst hurts, a dissonance heās never quite managed to reconcile. books were a hobby, but they were also an escape
willis and catherine were full of contradictions. they told him to never do drugs, but stress, pain, and hardship drove them both to separate addictions, which terrified and confused him in equal turn. they begged him to never turn to crime, while openly engaging in survival crime themselves just to keep a roof over their head. jason once accidentally stepped on a used needle catherine had dropped while trying to wake her up, and the ensuing freakout - which was rooted in concern, but came off as rage - instilled in him a deep fear of needles that had less to do with drugs and more to do with how scared of her heād been. for him, the people heād loved most and the people heād feared most had always been one and the same. love had always, implicitly, been interwoven with terror
for a long time, jason didnāt fully understand the details of catherineās decline. at first sheād told him she was sick - of what, she never said - and within the span of a few years heād watched as addiction took her body, mind, and finally life away. it wasnāt until he was much older, when he finally mustered up the courage to pull up her old health records, that he learned sheād been diagnosed , among other things, with advanced hiv/aids, and had been summarily refused treatment due to inability to pay
jasonās relationship with food is fucking weird, but heās NOT talking or thinking about it and neither should anybody else unless they want his foot up their ass (this is already too long so imma make this its own separate post) (also for easier filtering)
i ALSO really like the idea of shoving soul eater mechanics into the whole all blades thing - wherein the āall bladesā are part of a larger soul-magic discipline, where people can wield each otherās souls in battle, and where the ability for partner-souls to harmonize leads to better teamwork on the battlefield
i really like the idea of the all blades being a āreflectionā of the wielderās soul, and this in turn being a way of gauging jasonās spiritual + mental health and wellbeing (and THAT, in turn, betraying waaay more of his character than heād ever willingly admit to)
-like if he feels really defeated and hopeless, and doesnāt really see the point in putting up a struggle, the swords fizzle out and crumble, or refuse to the summoned, or fail to cut anything - but if he sees somebody calling for help, or he sees somebody he cares about in danger, itās all of a sudden rather easy to summon the swords and burn demons to ash. the swords being a direct reflection of his spirit and responding to his motivations, fears, dreams, and desires -

well i mean if anything i think it just goes to show that most if not all of his piss poor character writing has come from dcās core team, and isnāt representative of the story we couldāve gotten had the writers been afforded more creative freedom. what happened to gfm is exactly what iād expect from a centrist pro-cop imperialcore team of white usamerican men. their political commentary sucks and their grasp of reparative justice and morality has always rung hollow because dc is fundamentally more concerned with making money than it is about wrestling with the very real topics ājason toddā brings to the table. the respectability politics and performative outrage dcās currently exhibiting is just a veneer for the fact that deep down itās at least somewhat tolerant (if not outright sympathetic) to the conservative far-right bullshit kirk was spewing.
anyways i hope this is a beautiful turning point in gfmās career that allows her to freely write without some army-sympathizer editor breathing down her neck. maybe she can release a totally indie comic about her oc tason jodd where he rides around utah sniping bitches while contemplating estrogen
that comic panel of batman giving the batmobile an order and the car responding - i know itās just voice-activated rudimentary car ai but iāve been a transformers fan for too long to not immediately want a universe where the vehicles are characters themselves.
i always mean to sit down and write down all my headcanons for these guys in one place but the fact of the matter is, all my hcs are scribbled across 1zillion notes in my notes app and irl sketchbooks, and iām the type of guy who holds multiple contradictory headcanons at once on account of my love for the sacred principle of It Depends
