Daughter of the jötunn Þjazi, goddess of winter, hunting, and skiing. She lives high in the snowcapped dark mountains and is noted for her hunting skill and beauty. She is mainly known for her marriage to the god Njörðr, god of the sea. After her father is killed she goes to Asgard where the gods attone for their killing, allowing her to marry one of them, but she has to choose based on their feet. She chooses Njörðr, thinking him to be Baldr, and the gods additionally have to make her laugh, which they do by having Loki tie his testicles to a goat. The two have a rough marriage afterwards; he longs to live in the dark icy Þrymheimr and he wants to live by the sea, each of them struggling to enjoy the other's environment and parting ways, Skaði returning to the mountains alone. In a later account she marries Odin afterward, giving birth to the legendary king Sæmingr. She is additionally the one who places the serpent above Loki as he is bound, which drips venom onto him daily.
