The Unacknowledged
This Holocaust Remembrance Day I’d like to remind everyone that 6 million is only the number of Jewish victims, the total number of victims killed in concentration/death camps is estimated to be 11 million, with millions of others killed outside of them.
The non Jewish victims of the holocaust are made up of several demographics including Roma and Sinti, disabled people, queer people, political prisoners, and religious minorities, many of whom where not acknowledged until decades later.
It took until 1982 for the nazi persecution of Roma to be officially acknowledged in Germany, and until 1985 for homosexuals to be acknowledged, because both groups were considered criminals who were rightfully imprisoned rather than victims. Not only did they receive no reparations, but Jewish and political prisoners could be disqualified from victim status if they were discovered to be homosexual.
Do not let them be forgotten.
