SING ON
Singing On.
Four years ago, in my junior year of high school, I was doing my first volunteer job with Habitat for Humanity. During our break I checked my phone I saw people posting about a friend of mine named Shawn. These posts were all about how they were going to miss him and some tragedy that happened. I came to realize that he was fatally hit in a car accident in a very popular intersection on his way back from work. That following Monday, every individual in my high school, and many in the neighboring schools bared at least a shred of something yellow. Word had gotten out that yellow happened to not only be the color of sunshine, but that it was his favorite color (I'm pretty sure it was purple but whatevs). Nonetheless, the halls were drenched with a somber tinted yellow. I remember walking into choir, the one class I had with him besides my off period swing choir (which we were both trying to get into and I swear it was because of him being my audition partner that I made it the year prior), and seeing every person in the choir, including the directors, wrapped in yellow for him. We sang a song normally sung at the end of the year for the departing seniors, but now it's stained with the reminder of a soul that departed from us way too soon. Everyone was a blubbering mess. A giant mass of yellow balloons was released in his memory that evening. His memorial still stands to this day. Our phrase of grieving and resilience was "Sing On" and we made cute T shirts with his name on them. His parents got the justice they deserved for their loss, and even established a scholarship in his honor for the choir program. Losing him brought us together as we were reminded of our frail mortality and our precious sense of community that is needed to move on. I still miss him so much and I can only hope I'm making him proud as I sing on.
