like. okay example. Cars. yeah the franchise. human AUs of the Cars movies are just so fucking boring to me. you’re telling me you looked at this world where the vehicles are alive, and at least partially organic based on their needs and physical characteristics, and have endless fucked up worldbuilding and lore to explore, and said nah that’s not good enough. make Lightning a twink. which, don’t get me wrong, he absolutely is, but like? by humanizing them you’ve turned the idea of “racing but the cars are alive” into just. racing. there is so much of that. you’ve just made another one. holy shit two cakes, sure, but like if you scraped all the frosting and decoration off of one before eating it. do you understand.

example two, digital circus. this one is genuinely bizarre to me because, like, part of the entire premise of the show is that they are no longer human. And I’m not talking about pre or post circus content where they’re all like, back to Normal. I mean when the character avatars are just humans in costume. genuinely I don’t understand it. constantly these characters are talking about what the changes to their bodies did to their mental health and stability. It’s a huge part of the show that these forms are not human, and do not behave in human ways. and yet you look at this and say nah that’s not good enough. make Caine a twink. which, I have to be honest here, most people do completely wrong.

And honestly I can’t bring Zootopia into this without getting disproportionally upset.

There’s other stuff that gets me Less. Like, not much of DuckTales changes when you make them human. These characters being nonhuman has honestly very little to do with the story, and is more of a set dressing than anything - the story is still fun and exciting and unique without it. Whereas with something like the Sing movies, taking away the nonhuman aspects doesn’t change much of the fundamental story, if any, but it does make it,,, less interesting, because now it’s just a franchise about a singing competition. no fluffy koalas and massive elephants and intimidating wolves. There’s levels to this yknow.

It’s just like, it’s fun to consume media of nonhuman characters existing in a human setting, where society has somehow grown to exist almost the same as real life but with different beings in place of humans; or where being nonhuman is a big deal in-universe. That’s fun! And I think my main issue with then humanizing those characters is just, like. you’re making it Normal. you’re taking away the new and exciting stuff, replacing the unique challenges they face with like, Real Life equivalents. bro we’ve already seen that. we live that every day I don’t want to think about it anymore. I want to read about the cars facing car problems not default white guy number four William problems.

and maybe it also feels a little bit like a need to make them more Relatable, when part of the appeal for me of nonhuman characters is seeing that they are already relatable, personalized, humanized without needing to be human. I dunno if my point is getting across here, but. it frustrates me.

That’s the takeaway. It frustrates me. It also frustrates me when people don’t TAG THEIR SHIT CORRECTLY. FUCK YOU.
