Three years ago today one of the strongest and most inspiring women to have ever walked on Earth left our planet. Rest In Peace Simone Veil, the woman who survived the Holocaust, hold her own against anyone on her way, and championed the 1975 law that legalized abortion in France.
The debates in which she addressed the French National Assembly (9 women and 481 men at the time) lasted 3 days during which she fought opposition from her own government, received death threats and letters from people telling her they regretted she’d survived Auschwitz, argued against male politicians who spat on her, hurled insults and likened the legislation to a Nazi genocide. She broke down in tears in the Assembly but never backed down, and on 17 January 1975 abortion was legalised in France. It is known as the “Loi Veil” (Veil law).

She dies this Friday.
She was an heroine. A true strong woman who fought for the futur of all women in France.
She was an intellectual, a politician, a survivor, a sword and a shield for women’s rights when abortion was a shame. She was a witness of the true horror during the WWII but she was also the voice of the reconciliation. She was the voice of a hope for an harmony thanks to the UE. She was the first woman president of the european parliement. She won the right of abortion in spite of all the insults she could hear during her campaign.
She was a fighter and now she is - and forever- a french symbol, and an historical symbol that can inspired every woman in every country.
Thanks Simone Veil. Thank you for everything. You’re an example.

Petite fille, Simone Veil me fascinait ! Sa présence, sa diction, ses paroles. Je la trouvait incroyable ! Je buvais ses paroles. Je me souviens d'un soir, à la télé en noir et blanc, où elle a parlé des camps. Ce ne fut pas un choc, car très tôt j'ai su ce qu'il s'était passé, mais une profonde admiration devant le courage dont elle avait fait preuve et l'extrême dignité avec laquelle elle en parlait. Puis par Maman, j'ai appris très tôt son combat pour le droit des femmes ! Moment inoubliable et historique ! Ah, elle s'est bien battue ! Et nous toutes, lui disons merci et sommes reconnaissantes de ce qu'elle a fait pour notre liberté. Et puis, sa beauté physique. Je la trouvais tellement belle ! Ses yeux surtout et la forme de ses paupières et ses lèvres que je trouvais magnifiques !
