Simon Weaving’s “Review of Prisoners” is a prisoner to strange diction and typos. And the errors cannot be all explained away by the differences between Weaving’s British English and the obviously correct American English.

The average review reader knows there are differences between the dialects, e. g. color vs. colour, car park vs. parking lot. But “Gyllenhaal” is spelled the same in either dialect. For some reason twice the word “Gyllenhall” appears in Review.

The typos here are of course annoying and do detract from the stronger points of Review: the spoiler avoidance, the impressive restraint shown in praising the film, and Weaving’s startling claim of “how much we are all prisoners of our behaviour.”

The strange diction leads to some unintentional laughs. The detective played by Gyllenhaal “quietly goes about his investigation, raking up old crimes and flushing out possible suspects.”

After he raked up the old crimes I hope he bagged them and brought them to the municipal compost pile; and he was “flushing out possible suspects”? Ouch! Who knew colonics played a role in modern kidnapping investigations?

There’d be a case for police brutality for those possible suspects—if they didn’t feel so darn cleansed and destressed after questioning!

Review might not cleanse you, but the laughs it inspires will destress you.
