it’s also the way simon and river’s parents wanted him to be a doctor and he was happy to but when he actually wanted to save lives (or rather save river’s life) they kept trying to stop him. it wasn’t about him being a good person or having a meaningful life but instead about prestige and money and being well-standing in society. their parents were willing to overlook their daughter’s suffering in order to preserve their reputation and the ‘future’ for simon. but to simon being a doctor meant more than that. and saving river, despite having to give up his future and his family, was in the end the truest manifestation of his dreams.
