Sir Simon Marsden
SIMONS DEAD?!?!
olivia has not been allowed to be happy for longer than like a week man, the show should’ve let them have an actual relationship instead of just depression :(
I watched a very good documentary on Tubi about Simon Marsden, the great 20th century British photographer. He is famous for his amazing photos shot with an infrared filter. He’s also famous for his belief in ghosts and the world beyond this one. He traveled throughout the British Isles and Europe searching for and photographing haunted and numinous spaces.
The photos here are okay, but they have nothing of the original numinous quality and wonder. They’re quite good on a decent TV screen.
“It is not my intention to try and convince you that ghosts exist, but rather to hopefully inspire you not to take everything around you at face value; to show that what we are conditioned to believe is 'reality' may not be quite all that it seems, if only we take the time to inquire.”
I'm in S21 now (because I can binge shows way to fast lol) and Simon has yet again returned. As I have done this rewatch, while I'm glad Olivia has family beyond just her mother and awareness of why she exists ..... my mixed feelings on Simon have essentially solidified.
Now, overall I don't think the show intended for Simon to be a bad person. To come off as wrong. However, this show (in all it's eras) has this sort of focus with Olivia. It's that lack of family focus (even when she has Noah the show centers on this no other family - her family IS the job type concept). And I mean, it's there so much that it's an essential aspect of her character (even if not the heavy focus at that moment the audience is attuned to that fact about her). It's to the point, when she mentions a cousin in an episode my immediate thought was "miss ma'am you got your mom and bastard dad whose family you didn't know till you were grown what mystery cousin?"
Now, obviously the cousin could be from a sibling of her mother's or somewhere on her mother's side .... but the show has never once actively spoken on her mother beyond well - the assault which led to Olivia and the drinking and not being the best mother. I'm not against Liv actually having contacted with her mother's family (even got my own HC in regards to Serena's family). However, this aspect ties into the whole Simon of it all ....
We only ever get to see him on the show when there is a problem. Which, go back multiple seasons ago and Cragen (it was him, Porter, or Elliot I'd have to go back to the episode precisely think it was the Darius trial point - pretty sure Cragen points it out) makes a point to her about every time Simon appears in her life it's not good, he needs something, etc.
And I do get the show may not have been deliberately trying to make him that way .... but he does appear when his life isn't great and he wants Olivia to fix things. He doesn't even try to stay in contact, and yeah that's on Olivia too but I doubt she stopped trying immediately, she probably stops when he doesn't answer. And he blatantly admits to her 'I thought of asking you to track them down' in this ep.
Just ..... its the way this show when a character isn't present tends to ignore them. They disappear and don't exist. (Fin's family is an example of this as well - we Ken in some eps but he's mentioned sparingly between seasons. And yes I get it's actor stuff as well behind scenes but WRITING could easily mention family) Some of the ones that happen to it doesn't leave bad impact, but Simon was given the "it's in the genes" intro writing for Olivia's storyline and since then every time he appears he's constantly got something going on in his life. Constantly needing her to fix a problem.
Not that having her have images of little Olivia Marsden or hang ups with them or whatever throughout the show before these eps would really ease it but at least it would give a "he's actively been in my life and not just magically appear to manipulate our blood connection". Just wish we got this type of stuff instead (they do face times and phone calls with sitters, the kids, Ken and his husband and kid, etc - why not imply to others as well, even if can't get the actors can imply via writing)
