In a sunny location the woody stemmed perennial Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (wormwood) was creating a cloud of billowing silver foliage. This plant does best in a well-drained soil and will be short-lived in a poorly drained site.

This is a type of Ruschia (possibly Ruschia Uncinata) Ruschia are succulents that come from dry parts of Southern Africa. The flowers are only 2cm 3/4” so they are a lot smaller than Ice Plants. Easy to strike and do well in a rockery in full sun with not much water. The silver foliage of Artemisia ludoviciana (western mugwort) makes a great contrast with the glaucous leaves tinged with purplish-pink and the starry rose-pink flowers of Hylotelephium 'Vera Jameson' (stonecrop). Both these herbaceous perennials need a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and here these conditions are being provided by this raised bed.

Described as being able to add “a theatrical touch to the border” is the Mediterranean species Cynara cardunculus (globe artichoke, cardoon). This large and vigorous herbaceous perennial can reach 2.5m, forming a clump of silvery-grey leaves up to 1m in length. The flowers are on tall stems and emerge from large buds, the purple thistle flowers attract bees and the seeds are appreciated by flocks of finches.

Marrubium libanoticum (Lebanese White-Horehound) (set against a Fig leaf). Today’s #oneadayplant . Not having a great year as the rain in June was not welcome for it, but I love the silver foliage and these dainty whorls of white flowers. . It is a small plant only 40-50cm high and 20-30cm wide. Needs the sun and to be fairly dry to do well. Perhaps another year. . I like it for the dried stems in winter, which look good as part of a dried arrangement indoors too. . If you were intrigued by my other new Buddleja variety, this very different selection will hopefully be of equal interest. . Definitely the more commercial of the two selections I made. It has taken a few years to really come into its own, but the silver is very choice now. . Where the last plant was selected for its moody purple bud and vigorous growth, this form was for the velvety silver stems and leaves. It is less vigorous, but still gets up there. I selected them both because I wanted to produce plants to suit design purposes that I wanted answers for. I’m happy with my results thus far. . I’ll post more pics when it comes in to flower.
