Blue Moon is the latest film by Richard Linklater. Set on March 31, 1943, the opening night of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's in
'...The rest of the cast is also marvelous, especially Margaret Qualley and Andrew Scott. Scott has won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance during its World Premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, which makes perfect sense when you see him on screen as Richard Rodgers. He gives an incredibly mesmerizing performance, and you really do feel the tension between him and Hart...'
Both are upstaged by Richard Linklater’s obsessive attempts to shrink his leading man to a sub-five-foot stature
'...Blue Moon, at its best, captures the melancholy allure of a vanished Broadway. Set almost entirely over a night at Sardi’s, the theatreland pit stop, as Hart circles the premiere of Oklahoma! and the looming, rapturous verdict of the New York Times, the film whisks in Hart’s old songwriting partner Richard Rodgers (a poignantly patient Andrew Scott, who deservedly won a Silver Bear for his performance) and his affable new collaborator, Oscar Hammerstein (Simon Delaney)...
Robert Kaplow’s lively, sometimes daringly smutty period dialogue is occasionally upstaged by historical shoehorning. The script is not improved by an origin story for Stuart Little, the character created by the writer EB White, and an improbable introduction to Stephen Sondheim as a boy. Still, Hawke’s wounded bravado met by Scott’s tolerant firmness is an encounter to remember.'

Five-time Oscar-nominee Richard Linklater’s latest outing is a biographical musical.
The film focuses on American lyricist Lorenz Hart, played by four-time Academy-Award-nominee Ethan Hawke, one half of the Broadway titans Rodgers and Hart, and explores the navigation of sexuality and shame over the years.
The supporting cast includes Margaret Qualley and Ripley star Andrew Scott, who won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance at the Berlin Film Festival for his role as Richard Rodgers...'
Ethan Hawke delivers one of his best performances in Richard Linklater’s "Blue Moon." With a Telluride tribute, can he finally win an Oscar?
'...The film premiered in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Hawke’s co-star Andrew Scott won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance...
In “Blue Moon,” Hawke delivers a turn that is both theatrical and intimate, showcasing an actor at the height of his craft. He renders Hart as a man hanging by a thread while compelling audiences to absorb every moment. In addition, if the Academy embraces Hawke’s worthy efforts, it could help right the wrong of Andrew Scott’s Oscar snub for “All of Us Strangers” (2023), which also premiered in Telluride...'

Anemone, Nouvelle Vague, Pillion, Scarlet, and Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost are all new additions to the 2025 New York Film Festival

New York Premiere
The lyricist Lorenz Hart’s contributions to the Great American Songbook cycle, collaborations with composer Richard Rodgers, are the stuff of legend. Yet, in 1943, only months before he died from pneumonia, a consequence of heavy drinking, Hart’s partnership with Rodgers was on the rocks. Rodgers had first paired up with Oscar Hammerstein II, and their musical Oklahoma! had reinvigorated and all but reinvented narrative musical theater. Richard Linklater’s (Hit Man, NYFF61) luminous, erudite drama imagines a loquacious Hart (an astonishing tour de force by Ethan Hawke) on the night of Oklahoma!’s premiere, holed up at Sardi’s and moving through various stages of grief and acceptance—and blistering wit—when faced with Broadway’s new world order. Also featuring stellar supporting work from Andrew Scott (who won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance at the Berlinale), Margaret Qualley, and Bobby Cannavale, Blue Moon is a surprising yet entirely fitting addition to the Linklater canon: a film about the inevitable passage of time and the feeling of being left behind by those stuck in its folds. A Sony Pictures Classics release...'

It's not too far away!
'Blue Moon, the real-life drama starring Andrew Scott and Ethan Hawke, has landed its UK release date.
The 1940s-set film, from acclaimed director Richard Linklater, follows songwriter Lorenz Hart (Hawke) as he confronts his "shattered self-confidence" following the premiere of Oklahoma!, the musical penned by his former colleague, Richard Rodgers (Scott).
Boasting a stacked cast including Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale, the highly-anticipated Blue Moon has now confirmed its UK release date, with the period drama set to hit the big screen on 14 November.
Written by Robert Kaplow, the film attracted positive reviews upon its premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in February, where Scott won the award for Best Supporting Actor.
Furthermore, the film has a near-perfect approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 26 reviews, with its score currently standing at an impressive 96%. Its early user rating on IMDb is also positive, currently 7.3 out of 10.
"Blue Moon trusts that we want to engage with subjects that matter through deliberate dialogue," noted Slant Magazine as they praised Hawke's central performance, while Variety lauded the "great dialogue" in the drama they dubbed "sparkling".
"It’s not as universally accessible or emotionally captivating as Linklater’s existing catalogue, but Blue Moon is a rewarding experience for those willing to immerse themselves in its smooth, romantic rhythm," noted Next Best Picture.
Time Out was also full of praise, writing: "Linklater knows how to draw the most intimate performances from Hawke – and he’s brilliant here. His pairing with Scott, so devastating in All of Us Strangers, is note-perfect."
While Scott will soon be seen as the legendary composer, the Sherlock and Fleabag star recently landed a role in legal thriller A Place in Hell, with the actor set to appear alongside Michelle Williams and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Blue Moon is in cinemas on 14 November in the UK and 17 October in the US.'
